Starflowers are a springtime show of sweet, six-petaled blooms hovering over slender, deep green foliage. This fall-planted bulb emits a spicy fragrance and naturalizes like a dream, making it an excellent fit for woodland gardens and lawn plantings. With their long bloom time and charming good looks, Starflowers offer a warm welcome to spring. (Ipheion uniflorum)
To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low
temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.
If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will
survive the winter temperatures in your area.
If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack
of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).
The beautiful wild species, Triteleia laxa, is native all the way south to Southern California. The flowers look much like clusters of the beautiful Blue Eyed Grass, which is a small wild iris.
In any case, the Dutch hybridizers have made a really beautiful flower from this American Beauty'. This mixture gives you the blues and whites. Better Homes and Gardens recently had an article showing how it's great for cutting and creating stunning arrangements. BH&G also tells us that the foliage of this bulb is nothing much, so it's best planted among hostas or other low foliage plants, so the stunning flower spikes rise through neighboring leaves.
