Plant Information

Showy, velvety deep purple flowers with orange anthers add great color to any spring garden. (Crocus tommasinianus)

These are the ones called 'Snow Crocus' for obvious reasons. They bloom well before the Dutch Crocus, so for a long season of crocus bloom, plant them both. They work almost exactly the same. Unlike the Dutch crocus group of hybrids, these are true 'wild bulbs'--species crocus that grow in the wild in Greece and other areas. Add these jewel-toned beauties to your wildflower collection, and you'll enjoy them for years.

I planted them last fall. Many spouts came up this spring...don't remember exactly but I recall mid-end March. Now it's the end of April, and I haven't seen ANY FLOWERS AT ALL!! The leaves stay green and healthy to me. I've been looking them every morning, but there are really NO SIGNS OF BLOOMING!! Very disappointing. Since May is approaching and the temperature is getting hot during the day these days, I would assume I will not see blooming this year.. Oh well, what happened to my crocus!!

This little crocus is indeed little. But it was a wonderful surprise! The flowers popped open early and were a great break from snowy winter. After the flowers fade you are left with a pretty grassy patch. I intend to get more.

Comments about American Meadows Wild Crocus Bulbs Ruby Giant:

Planted the bulbs last fall as instructed. Other bulbs in the garden started sprouting before these. I was nervous that they weren't going to grow but I read online that crocuses take longer than usual to sprout when newly planted.
Then one day the weather got into the 70's and BAM! They all popped up and flowered. A very deep purple almost violet/blue. I'm very pleased.

I placed groups of 15 to 20 bulbs in groups across my lawn and every spring I get compliments on the splashes of color. Very hardy and last up to 3 weeks in full bloom. I purchase some every year and just keep adding them in different places. They look so good against the drab grass which is weeks away from coming to life.

                      Q & A

                      Plant With These:

                      USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

                      • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
                      • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).
