Plant Information

In mild areas, alyssum will bloom all season long. This is one reason this little European wildflower has been a garden favorite for centuries. While usually white, sweet alyssum sometimes blooms with a rose or violet blush, adding to its charm.

Comments about American Meadows Sweet Alyssum Seeds:

You can't go wrong with American Meadows' Sweet Alyssum seeds! Sprouts appear just a day or two after planted. And they keep on growing into lush carpets of snow-white blossoms. Being short in stature, they're a wonderful choice for the front of the border, where you can show them off. Sweet Alyssum--an all around gem of a seed!

We have a long fence line of alternating arborvitae and roses. Planted the sweet alyssum between and in front of the shrubs. The plants came up quickly, have been showing their stuff all summer and are still blooming and in perfect shape in the last half of October. Very, very pleased with quality of the seeds.

They smell wonderful and grew profusely. They were not as neat and tidy looking as the usual garden shop variety. Would not recommend for a manicured looking landscape. Great for fragrance and filling in an area.

Comments about American Meadows Sweet Alyssum Seeds:

I agree with other reviewers who give this product a high rating. It is one of the easiest I have used. Low effort simply requires sprinkling seeds multiple times throughout the growing season for extended bloom. I use this and American Meadows' baby's breath seeds in the same way – to apply the final touches, and "fluff" to the garden, like the frosting and sprinkles used to finish decorating a cake. Just sprinkle the seeds in garden areas not occupied by other flowers. They germinate readily, grow, and bloom quickly. This plant appears to be delicate, but it is tough enough to withstand summer heat. I sprinkled seeds along the edge of a garden that lines my paved driveway, and it seemed to crawl right out onto the hot pavement, in full sun. I was amazed that the summer heat magnified by the black pavement did not kill it. Yet, it seemed quite happy, and bloomed profusely. It grows low to the ground. I have never knelt and bent over to smell it. Nor have I plucked it from the ground to smell it. I cannot therefore comment on its fragrance that other reviewers enjoy. I will need to give sweet alyssum a sniff when it blooms this year so that I get to enjoy the fragrance as well as the visual appeal of these sprinkles on our frosted garden cake!

I live in Zone 7 (Texas) where it is very dry and hot. Sweet Alyssum seeds perform like a charm here, provided you water the seeds to get them to germinate. From then on, once or twice a week watering is all that's needed. The germination rate is great, and blooms follow about a month or two later. And what a sweet fragrance!!

Comments about American Meadows Sweet Alyssum Seeds:

For years I tried to grow alyssum from pots at chain stores. They would always die in the heat. But these little seeds are so dependable. In Nov/Dec I sprinkle them around... toss some leaves or a lite coating of soil or nothing on top and then in the spring they bloom very reliably. If you cut the tops off and toss them where you want next years crop to come up you can spread them around the garden. These delicate little things grow reliably in the green space between the sidewalk and the street. They go to seed when the heat sets in only to bloom again the next year. I like them so much I bought more this year.

Just sprinkle some seeds on bare soil and in a month you'll have gorgeous white blooms that smell of honey! Perfect filler for paths and flowerbeds.
It does reseed itself, but you'll still want to buy more seeds so you can seed every 2 months during the bloom season for constant blooms.

I use AM Sweet Alyssum seeds to fill in around all my bulbs, periennials and in pots because they complement everything. They grow quickly to stiffle weeds, and are blooming in a matter of weeks. In full sun, and with generous hose sprinkling, they begin sprouting in about 3 days, and are a beautiful green carpet until the blooms arrive. In Florida, they grow year round, and survived the 2010 cold and frosts. They easily re-seed. Sprinkle the seeds generously on the ground and water, and watch them grow into a beautiful white carpet.

                              Q & A

                              Plant With These:

                              USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

                              • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
                              • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).
