False Aster is a prolific bloomer, providing hundreds of small, white blooms on each plant from late summer until frost. This native wildflower is also an important source of pollen for butterflies, bees, wasps and more. False Aster tolerates moist to wet soil, making it a great choice for a rain garden. (Perennial)
To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low
temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.
If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will
survive the winter temperatures in your area.
If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack
of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).
False Aster, or Boltonia asteroides, is a tall-growing native wildflower. Hundreds of white blooms sit atop plants that can grow from 5-6’ tall, depending on the soil type. Plants will be shorter grown in drier soil and taller in a more moist soil. If plants start to need support in the early summer months, False Aster can be cut back by 1/3 and will still provide prolific blooms.
This easy-to-grow wildflower provides nourishment for pollinators in the late summer all the way into fall and will attract a variety of butterflies, bees, and wasps. We recommend planting this native beauty with Goldenrod, Aster or Joe-Pye Weed for a colorful late-season finale in your garden.
