After battling with a shady backyard riddled with plants of questionable rapport, I decided to give the entire problem area a facelift.

I simply covered everything (everything) with a layer of newspaper, covered it with organic garden soil, threw seed everywhere, stomped it all in all nice-like, and hoped for the best. In the beginning, it took a lot of watering for what seemed like little to no payoff. Growth was slow, but steady, and I started worrying.

That is, until everything started shooting up like crazy when the soil warmed. First up we're Five Spot and Baby Blue Eyes. Tiny little things that satiated me until the Snapdragons and Chinese houses took off everywhere! Now, I'm patiently waiting the bloom of so many more, and currently unidentifiable, wildflowers.

My small backyard went from zero to hero, birds and squirrels love it, and I've seen less unsavory pests in my yard, since! This is turning out to be a lovely adventure with wildflowers, as the journey brings me a sense of reward (watching them grow) and new color to what was once a troublesome experience.

American Meadows has done it. I keep coming back for more varieties and will continue to do so for a very long time.

After tending to my soil quality, I dispersed the seed as directed. Through spring, I had a lovely bloom of small, low-growing annuals. The remainder of growth, which seems spotty, has been echinacea foliage. I do look forward to those, next year. But in truth, I only saw 5 annuals bloom; all of which ceased when summer warmth hit. I won't say I'm disappointed, but I do believe that my conditions will tolerate only a limited variety of what is provided in the seed mix. I've decided to buy only the varieties that did well and to be grateful that I rid myself of most of the grass, Mosquitos, and slugs.

Comments about American Meadows Partial Shade Wildflower Seed Mix:

I sprinkled these seeds in various flower pots on our roof deck that gets tons of sun as well as on a shaded patio. In the sun they came up huge and very quickly and in the shade they were much slower as they clearly need sunlight. I'd say partial shade is the ideal, as they say on the package, as the ones in the sun needed extra watering to stay vibrant. Got dried out quickly with too much sun.

    Good with limited expectations

Comments about American Meadows Partial Shade Wildflower Seed Mix:

Ok, understand shade isn't the best and limit your expectations.

I've got an area with maybe 1-2hrs spotted sun, 2-4hrs minimal sun, and the remained of the day in full shade. The area is on the side of a big four story building and the soil gets parking lot and salt spray so has a hard time supporting JUNIPER and only okay for growing dandelions and familiar weeds!

I didn't weed, didn't prepare the hard soil, didn't gently press in the seeds, I just lazily broadcast the seeds where they could get eaten by birds. That was May. Soon enough we got moderate growth and some spots of color. Not a dazzling, bursting display, of flowers, but something I see passersby stop and comment on and dramatically better than what we could do before. It no longer looks like a barren, neglected patch of "landscaping."

From a commercial perspective, this has saved SO MUCH MONEY!!! It has made it so that my landscaper/handyman doesn't have to weed, doesn't have to buy a bunch of expensive plants laborious to install, and doesn't have to maintain. It just sits like a little patch of semi-wild flowers.

I had no idea what I was doing and followed the instructions. Planted in early spring under some trees in an area that doesn't grow much. This mixed worked great! At first my husband joked saying it looked like a weed garden. Once the soil warmed it bloomed all colors and everyday there is something new and it smells amazing!

Comments about American Meadows Partial Shade Wildflower Seed Mix:

In the end, only a couple varieties grew and bloomed. They were pretty, but did not do nearly as well as the other two mixes I planted. I was *not able* to till the soil as recommended due to extensive tree roots (tree no longer living, so still had the required sun), so perhaps that affected the growth, although I did completely weed the soil first.

Zone 7 - Starting last fall I followed the American Meadows instructions for planting wildflower seeds. I cleared the area (approx 500 sq ft) tilled, and the first of December I sowed the seeds. By the end of January seedlings were sprouting. Now we are at the end of March and the seedlings are really coming through and some (Baby Blue Eyes) are blooming!! I am very excited to see how the rest of the flowers do this year. Thank you American Meadows!!

the vegetable garden was too big (25x100) since our children left and the garden was too much work. We planted half the garden with wild flowers, and next season will add more wild flowers and less vegetables. Every few weeks different flowers came up. first almost all white, then blue, then all different colors. Looking forward to spring to see how it will look the then.

This mix added some color to a portion of land too narrow to farm. The main draw back is that the invasive plants were much more aggressive in growth. I will use this same mix in hopes of overcrowding the invasive grasses.

Planted in open field for color and interest. I planted as instructed but never saw any blooms. Not impressed.

Excellent mix that surprises with variety and color. Took longer than I expected to start blooming (planted in April/May), but I think this had to do more with the location I choose. It has been blooming all summer with more coming for the fall.

I had purchased this for the more shady area of my yard I seeded and waited. Maybe the deer or other pests got the seedlings but I never even saw sprouts. Next order I will try Deer Resistant and see if I have any luck with those.

I did an experiment last year. I planted some of these wildflowers in a location that gets more than four hours of sunlight a day and some in a location that gets dappled sunlight. They did outstanding in the area that gets at least four hour of sunlight a day and did poorly in the woodsy, dappled sunlight. But I loved them so much in the area where they did well that I ordered some more for this year. They have a strong "red, white, and blue" presence and also have some orange. I just loved them. They lasted for three seasons and didn't require maintenance -- although I have to say, our rain conditions were pretty optimal last year.

Extremely fast service. We have purchased a lot this year to work on erosion control on steep hills. Becuase we had a limited amount of time to plant in the summer this year, it was hard to tell if we could have had even more wilflowers if we had been able to plant iin the spring. Maybe it will do even better in 2016

I used this product to fill in a large area in which all ground covers that I used proved to be too labor intense, sensitive to light conditions and ground conditions. I also wanted something that would provide some privacy. My only negative comment would be that the taller plants fell into the walk way with heavy rain falls so the walking path between the planted area and my pond became hazardous and needed to be cleared. Just a task that I didn't enjoy doing.

I purchased these seeds for a shady area at the back of my lot. They came up but never matured and certainly did not bloom.

Planted this mix on a newly graded dirt roadside next to my driveway. Because the new road material that the town used was only gravel, I augmented the gravel with commercial compost. Broadcast the seed in the late spring. Because this was on a fairly steep bank, I covered the seed very lightly with landscaping straw in order to protect the seed from heavy rains. Well, it all came together very nicely. Lots of flowers by early summer and still blooming beautifily. This spot only gets about 3-4 hours of sun a day.

I didn't have time to plant my usual vegetable garden this year so I decided to sow wild flowers instead. This is such an easy way to create a low maintenance area of incredible beauty. My wild flower meadow is a constantly changing rainbow of color throughout the season and it is filled with bees, butterflies, and dragonflies adding yet another dimension.

                                                                Plant With These:

                                                                USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

                                                                • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
                                                                • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).
