What's in this Mix?

This premium mixture is blended to take advantage of the wet coastal climate of this region, which is a natural garden for wildflowers. Many of the Pacific coast natives are included such as chinese houses, farewell-to-spring, and California poppy. Plant almost anytime along the coast; at higher elevations, after spring frost.

This mixture contains 28 wildflowers, 17 annuals for first-year color, plus 11 perennials or biennials for second and successive years' bloom.

I buy the pound of wildflowers every year now to plant where my beloved pets are laid to rest. It makes the area so pretty. Planting is so easy and they come up in abundance. The only necessary thing is to cover the area up with netting until they are growing so the birds don't think I'm feeding them. This photo was taken early in the season. By fall they are even more beautiful.

Comments about American Meadows Pacific Northwest Wildflower Seed Mix:

I live in the PNW and I bought this seed mix to put in my flower beds in the front that gets hot sun most of the day. I followed the instructions and weeded best I could then literally threw the seeds on the ground throughout the empty spaces in the beds. Sure enough in about 6 weeks I had sprouts growing and throughout the spring and early summer I had different kinds of flowers. It was great! I didn't even water them. Now that summer has been baking the ground they are not looking too great. I am hoping with more rain they will perk up. Overall would do again and would weed better next time.

Gorgeous in acidic sun-shade location under pine trees

Comments about American Meadows Pacific Northwest Wildflower Seed Mix:

I have a relatively sunny area under a couple of pine trees - ground covered with pine needles. I spread this mix under the trees mid-December and by mid-April couldn't see the ground because of the huge number of wildflowers that grew - many different varieties in the mix came up. I can verify that the Pacific Northwest mix works well in acidic soil (up to 1 inch of rotting pine needles under pine trees) in San Francisco bay area. I live very near the bay in a cooler, moister microclimate than much of SF area. I've uploaded of photo of an area that is protected with a deer fence. I've not been as lucky outside the deer fence with deer constantly nibbling at the plants...

Comments about American Meadows Pacific Northwest Wildflower Seed Mix:

TIP FOR PLANTING: As these seeds (and most wildflower seeds) are planted very shallow (on or near the surface), if you can cover the area with plastic for the winter and/ or early spring, it is ideal. This not only protects seedlings from frost, it also protects the seed from birds, which can eat nearly all seed in a new plot before it even germinates. This also prevents weed seed from entering the plot. Plastic can be removed when 4-5" tall for best results. Use the heaviest -mil clear plastic available, I use re-purposed greenhouse plastic. When temperatures rise above freezing, I will pull back plastic and refresh with a feeding seed-starter mix 2 times per winter and weed out the area at the same time.

We seeded both banks of our creek. Plenty of sun and rain, no frost. Still nothing. Absolutely nothing germinated out of 10 pounds of seed. Very disappointing. Will be asking for a refund.

Comments about American Meadows Pacific Northwest Wildflower Seed Mix:

This collection fills in an area that was in desparate need of life. I tried other ground covers and could never get any to survive. I simply prepared the area as described and spread the seeds over the area. Within a few weeks there was growth showing forth and by early summer the colors were giving me much joy. It is now the beginning of fall and I am still enjoying the dazzling aray. I am looking forward to the spring to see what will return.

Comments about American Meadows Pacific Northwest Wildflower Seed Mix:

The purpose of purchasing this product Pacific NW Wildflower Mix) was to attract bees and butterflies. Also, to beautify part of the landscape on my 10-acre property in Rainier, WA.

The ground was tilled several times in September and October and it was disced and harrowed several times. Large rocks (>2 in) were removed. The ground was seeded heavy and more than what was recommended in late November after the first freeze. Also,it was seeded again in early Spring. As of today May 31, 2015 very few (about 5%) scattered non grass vegetation grew. I monitored the ground moisture level and watered as needed after the first dry spell.

It appears that I had a dark blue thumb in this project as opposed to a nice green thumb and I feel disappointed.

I was quite disappointed with this wildflower mix. Most seeds did not germinate! Only some of the California poppy and the Alyssum came up. Since in California, wildflowers start coming up in December/January time frame which is when the rains start, American Meadows should send these seeds out in August/September so that they can be sown BEFORE the rains start. By not receiving these seeds until April means that the seeds have missed the window of opportunity to sprout and grow with the winter rains.

Watched and read every resource I could find on this website to prep my site as suggested. Did what it said. We got very few flowers out of it. This was a project with my 6-year old daugther who wanted a wildflower garden. The flowers we did get she enjoyed but we got nothing like the sample photo either in color or quantity which is how she chose the flowers in the first place. We live near Seattle so the Pacific Northwest Mix seemed like the winner but was not. Will try again next year though as she wants to keep trying.

I must confess I really didn't prepare the planting area well. I just threw the seed out there and hoped for the best. Well. . . the best came. This seed takes off and seemingly needs nothing from mere humans. My neighbors come and peek over my fence to see what is growing. Easy. Maintenance free. Beautiful. What more could you want?

I don't know if my soil is bad or the mix failed, but we got a short bloom on the pink color and only the small white daisy-ish flowers are left. This is only the end of May! Really dissappointng!

Bought it to create Seed Bombs for my wedding and it worked out so nicely that we decided to grow some in our flower beds (to be cut and use for wedding decor). . .we have a tough flower bed in the Shade of a couple of large Sequoias where not much grows, but presently these seeds are popping up quite nicely. . .

Comments about American Meadows Pacific Northwest Wildflower Seed Mix:

I have tried to plant a wildflower meadow for years. On the East Coast and West Coast, all have failed to produce what mother nature does so well. I have recently been introduced to your company this past year and I was very excited to try your Wildflower mix. I scattered the seeds about 6 weeks ago and my dark brown earth is covered in a haze of healthy vigorous green shots. They are all about 6-8 inches high and I cannot wait for the warmth to come and the color to burst. I look forward to sending you pictures in a few months.

I have always wanted a meadow of flowers. I planted one this spring and am awed by its beauty every day. Each day brings a new color, height, change in landscape. . . it is like watching a beautiful painting unfold. I combined this seed with others so have a wonderful blend of plants. But the PNW seed has added the flowers I remember as a child.

I have a new home with two acres of fields and very poor soil. These plants took off and are blooming with abandon all over despite the poor soil and they look beautiful. Our home overlooks the first hole of the golf course and we feel honor bound to create a beautiful landscape for the golfing community.

Beautiful despite not eliminating all old weed seeds before planting. This is year two and the mix is completely different. Enjoyed watching the color and variety come on all season. A skeptical neighbor is putting in a 'wildflower strip' along her side of her house as my field won her over.

Comments about American Meadows Pacific Northwest Wildflower Seed Mix:

Didn't like weeding out the stinging nettles or their prickly friends but loved watching my garden grow. I had limited sun in my meadow area and noticed the sunnier part was much more dense with flowers. I let my preschooler sprinkle the seeds and we all enjoyed cut flowers in the house through summer.

                                                      Plant With These:

                                                      USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

                                                      • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
                                                      • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).
