Plant Information

No one knows who Susan was, but the flower is linked with “Sweet William” in an old English rhyme. This species was long thought to be native only to our midwest, spreading to both coasts after colonists and western pioneers felled the forests to allow the highly-prolific seed to spread. But recent research proves Black-Eyed Susan was indeed seen as far east as Maryland in early colonial times. There are many species of rudbeckia, many which have been hybridized into some of our most valued garden perennials. For related perennial species, see R. gloriosa.

Incredibly satisfied with this product! The instructions were clear, and I followed them to the letter (site prep, sowing, timing, etc). I sowed on May 2, and had germination by May 15. Germination rate was phenomenal! I worried about weeds at first. Weeded as best I could, but soon enough I realized that the Black-eyed Susans were going to win. By July 15, I had my first bloom, and now, over two weeks later, I've got massive blooming going on (see pics).

The flowers are beautiful, and very much animal resistant. My meadow is overrun with deer and rabbits, but they will not touch this plant! So happy with the results, and will order from American Meadows again without hesitation!

Waiting for blooms

Seeds have sprouted and the growth is looking good. I have some buds, but not any blooms yet. No reason to think they won't bloom, so looking forward to all the color!

Started beekeeping this year and have turned open grass areas into large wildflower areas. Great to look at, good for the bees and greatly cuts down on mowing time. Mixed in with large bag of wildflower seed mix.

Comments about American Meadows Black Eyed Susan Seeds:

Seeds are so small its easy to over sow. We used a 50 pound bag of play sand to mix in with the seeds and sowed them in that way. Try to plant when rains are coming, watering brings weeds fast.
Also watering can wash out the seeds, that happened the first time.

Comments about American Meadows Black Eyed Susan Seeds:

Planted the seeds in 2 areas. One "Hard clay" area did not do well, a few plants here and there. The other was a richer soil, not great, but they grew well.
Lots to learn as far as planting large areas (1/2 acre or more). There was lots of weeds that were there originally, tilling only and removing the old growth is NOT enough. They came back with the flowers. Some weeds were nasty..... I would Round up first, remove the dead weeds and weed seeds if necessary; till and plant. The clay areas, I think were just to hard and not much nutrition in the soil. I amending the soil and will replant in the fall.

Selected Black eyed susans for color between the foundation of our home and new shrubbery due to tormado damage 4/10. Seeds germinated beyond expectations but did not mature due to drought and watering with our only source..treated water. Next season will replant and attempt to catch rain water instead. Our neighbors also had the same results. Unusually high temps and low/no rain.

I am very pleased with the black eyed susans. We have had a severe drought in the Midwest this year - like one I've never experienced - and the blackeyed susans just keep coming. They are definitely drought tolerant and I would recommend if you are wanting to add beautiful color to your summer landscapes.

Black Eyed Susans do grow wild in my location but we just can't get enough of them, I enjoy the flowers for the long bloom time and striking yellow/gold color, later in the year the Gold Finches are attracted to them and great to watch

They have done amazingly well. They were over achievers compared with the rest of the meadow from day 1. Considering I didnt expect any blooms the first year, I've been impressed with how many have bloomed already this year and cant wait to see the big show next year.

I saw these growing in another area east of where I live in the city of Palm Springs. When I saw them growing - I had to have some. So I ordered them from American Meadows. This was my first experience. These grew rapidly and were hardy. SO GORGEOUS ! I started plucking them and made flower arrangements (putting them in Ball wide mouth canning jars and tying raffia around the jar) with other wild flowers ordered from American Meadows with a few of my roses. And it was with great pride I made an arrangement and carried it to City Hall and dropped one off for the Mayor's assistant (Palm Springs mayor) I LOVE MY BLACK EYE SUSANS ! THANK YOU AMERICAN MEADOWS !

                                                  Q & A

                                                  Plant With These:

                                                  USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

                                                  • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
                                                  • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).
