Foxglove Beardtongue is a pollinator magnet, attracting a wide variety of bees to the early summer garden, including honeybees, mason bees, bumblebees and even hummingbirds and butterflies. This native wildflower is extremely easy to grow, thriving in full sun to partial shade. Each stalk produces multiple white blooms in late spring to early summer. To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low
temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.
If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will
survive the winter temperatures in your area.
If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack
of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).
Foxglove Beardtongue, or Penstemon digitalis, is an easy-to-grow wildflower that is native to Missouri. It thrives in clay or dry soil (wet or poorly-draining soil can cause root rot) but can grow in full sun to partial shade, making it adaptable to many regions. A true pollinator magnet, the tube-like blooms attract a variety of long-tongued bees as well as butterflies and hummingbirds.
Growing to be about 36” tall, this taller variety is great for the border of a garden, meadow or to naturalize an area. Foxglove Beardtongue will spread each season, is deer resistant and makes for spectacular mid-season bouquets.
