Plant Information

This daisy, which is native to mountain areas in Western Europe, is somewhat larger and taller than our common wild (Ox-Eye) daisy, C. leucanthemum. It is also less aggressive, thus useful where the common wild daisy can become a pest. A favorite species of meadow gardeners, since these daisies create an unforgettable vision of beauty in full meadow bloom, waving in the wind.

Comments about American Meadows Shasta Daisy Seeds:

Once established in the field (2-3 years) iconic Shasta Daisies become favorite long-blooming perennial wildflowers. Grown from potted plants and/or seed these daisies blend with coneflowers, black-eyed Susans, salvia, Russian sage, liatris, blanket flowers, coreopsis, Sweet William, yarrow, lupine, grasses, and more, to form near maintenance-free naturalized meadows or gardens. Transplanted clumps survive and thrive with little additional care. Patience is needed if planted from seed.

I paired these with a few established plants for the best of both worlds. I now have a thick stand of daisies and, thanks to the established plants, I had blooms earlier in the season too.

Comments about American Meadows Shasta Daisy Seeds:

I bought ¼ pound of daisy seeds from American Meadows in 2011. As usual, I tested germination in peat pellets within a covered flat before broadcasting the seeds in soil. (I do this so that I have a 'feel' for the quality of the seeds and do not too hurriedly contact A.M. to report a warranty claim.) Germination was spectacular when I ran my test. It was equally spectacular in the garden. I got so many daisy plants that I had to thin them out. Not wanting to cost the lives of the thinned plants, I transplanted them. They survived too! I had so many seeds that I gave some away, and I saved some for future years, wondering if they would still germinate as the seeds aged. I broadcast some into soil spring 2013, and indeed, germination was prolific! I thinned seedlings, transplanting some, and giving others to neighbors. I STILL have seeds left, and this winter I will use the seed spreader that I got as a free gift during an A.M. promotion to see if these seeds still germinate when broadcast into an area where I have not previously planted daisies.

Either 2011 was a great year of daisy seeds and I got a really good bag, or Shasta daisy simply is one of the most reliable seeds available. It has performed very well for me. I am a daisy lover, and I am happy with these seeds (although I must confess that I got more than I can use). If all bags from A.M. have the same quality seeds I bought, I highly recommend this seed for other daisy lovers. I can easily give these seeds 5 stars.

Comments about American Meadows Shasta Daisy Seeds:

Mixed with Black eyed susans for early germination, long lasting reblooming, perennial, critter resistance. Due to long, unusually hot and dry season did not survive as hoped. Need to use rain water instead of our only source: treated water. I am convinced that the chemicals in our water make it safe to drink, hard water and due to length of drought damaged our plants. Will replant next season.

I keep adding to this area with more Daisies, the first year I have just a small plant but after that each year taller and more eye appealing, I am glad I am doing this area in memory of my mother who loved them daisies.

Comments about American Meadows Shasta Daisy Seeds:

As is the case with most of my wildflower plantings, I enjoy the beauty of the flowers, but continue to be disappointed with the amount of germination. I don't know what I can do to improve the germination. I prepare the seed bed, mix the seed with clean sand, spread the seed, tamp the seeds down, and water at least twice daily for 4 - 6 weeks. I continue to be disappointed with the amount of germination with the exception of Alyssum.

                  Q & A

                  Plant With These:

                  USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

                  • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
                  • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).
