This wild violet is loved in gardens all over the world and once established, can spread rapidly. The iconic blooms are a cheerful purple and yellow with a white ‘face,’ resembling the pansy. Growing to be only 4-12” tall, this is a staple at the edge of the meadow or underneath trees. If planted in partial shade, Johnny Jump Ups can bloom all season long. All of the seed we handle at American Meadows is non-GMO, neonicotinoid-free and guaranteed to grow. Perennial.
To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low
temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.
If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will
survive the winter temperatures in your area.
If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack
of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).
This famous little plant sports a cheery purple, yellow and white “face”, reminding us of pansies. It is mentioned by Shakespeare, and also in Greek mythology, where it is said to have once been pure white, until wounded with one of Cupid’s arrows. A great, permanent species for the edges or front of any wild meadow, and very useful under high trees. (If planted in partial shade, it can bloom all season.)
