Heirloom Maximilian Sunflower gives you the iconic look of Sunflowers but continues to bloom year after year. Illuminating the garden with golden-yellow blooms from summer into fall, and reaching up to 10 ft tall, this perennial Sunflower will quickly become the true backbone of your wildflower meadow or garden. An open-pollinated variety, Maximilian is easy to grow and attracts birds, butterflies and other pollinators all season long. All of the seed we handle at American Meadows is non-GMO, neonicotinoid-free and guaranteed to grow. Perennial.
To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low
temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.
If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will
survive the winter temperatures in your area.
If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack
of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).
Get the drama, height, and color of Sunflowers year after year with Maximilian. The large, sturdy green stems produce gorgeous yellow blooms in summer through fall. Native to our North American prairies, this sunflower is great food for livestock and produces a large crop of seeds each year. This makes it attractive to other wildlife, including small mammals, migratory birds, and native songbirds. Maximilian is also a larval host to the Silvery Checkerspot Butterfly. Maximilian prefers moist but well-draining clay soils, but will tolerate a wide range of soil types. Easily grown from seed. Maximilian is named after Prince Maximilian of Germany, a naturalist who led an expedition to the West from 1832-1834.
