Blue Flag is a real beauty, with classic violet-blue iris blooms on stalks growing from 2 to 3 feet. The flowers are up to 4" across, making it very showy for a wildflower. It's native from Canada down to Virginia, and west to Minnesota--in fact, sometimes whole wet meadows are covered with this late spring beauty, creating a spectacular sheet of shining blue. Blue Flag can be successfully grown wherever there is a strong winter freeze.
This treasured iris is not invasive in watery areas like its cousin, "Yellow Flag," so it's a perfect wildflower garden plant--as long as you have a wet spot in sun or shade.
A similar, but shorter species occurs farther south and is called "Southern Blue Flag."
As with all irises, growing them from seed is not difficult, but may take some time. The plant must create its bulky roots before it can bloom.
