A lover of wetlands, moist meadows and woods. Yellow Fringed Orchid or also known as Orange Plume is a perfect fit for gardens or areas that are never dry. This native plant is a magnet for butterflies given its showy orange flowers during the summer months. (Platantheracillaris)
To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low
temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.
If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will
survive the winter temperatures in your area.
If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack
of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).
Yellow Fringed Orchid, or Platanthera ciliaris, is also known as orange plume. Native American tribes in the Eastern United States used the yellow-fringed orchid for medicinal and other purposes. It’s a native wildflower that loves bogs, moist meadows, and swamps. The orange flowers blooms in late spring and continues through to late summer. It’s relatively easy to grow as long as they are provided with lots of moisture.
