Description

Selected for more vibrant color and slightly larger flower clusters than the species, 'Silky Deep Red' Tropical Milkweed provides season-long blooms and lasting color. Flowers are a great source of nectar for bees, butterflies, hummingbirds and other pollinators and beneficial insects.

In cooler zones, grow as an annual or as a statement in container gardens. In zones 9 and up, tropical milkweeds should not be allowed to overwinter, so cut back the foliage when other milkweeds are naturally senescing. This encourages monarch butterflies to naturally migrate on time, and eliminates the potential for harmful monarch parasites to survive the winter and infect next year's butterfly populations.

Plants flower best in full sun but tolerate light shade. Like other asclepias, tropical milkweed is resistant to deer and rabbit browsing.
