Planting Fall Bulbs in our City Garden

This past weekend my friend Jintina and I finished planting our garden bed that is devoted to fall-planted bulbs. Greeted with a gorgeous fall morning, we put our gardening gloves on and got to work!

We decided to layer tulip and crocus bulbs in the last section of the garden. This layering combination is perfect as the tulips need to be planted about 5” deep and the crocus 3”. We live in a city and have limited garden space, so layering bulbs is a great solution to packing as much color into our garden as possible. We were able to fit over 250 tulips, daffodils, allium, and crocus into our small garden bed by layering the bulbs on top of one another.

Layering also creates a long-lasting, colorful show in spring because of the staggered blooming times of the different bulbs.
