Black Cohosh likes wet woods, thickets, and is native all the way from Eastern Canada into Georgia.
By the way, this is one native that has recently been reclassified. Most still call it Cimicifuga racemosa, but the official botanical name is now Actaea racemosa.

"These were crowns planted in Fall and started sprouting up in early spring. I planted 4 crowns but only 2 actually got started. Very hardy, planted in shady area near creek with somewhat clay soil . The biggest thing is the deer nip off the to so they never bloom for me. I hope they keep coming back and spread a little. #sweepstakes"

"I ordered 3 bags of three. Nine total. One bag only had one dry root. The other two bags contained three, but two of those were so puny it looked like they could have just been pieces that came off of one of the main pieces of dry root stock. Of the possible 7 (probably 5) I received, 4 of them came up. Either way, 4 is a sad number when you've ordered and paid for nine. They grow here naturally in Ohio, so I think I'll just go dig some up this year and save myself some money in the future."
