The President Canna Lily is a classic variety with long-lasting red-orange blooms standing above lush foliage. This variety has graced the White House Garden for years. From mid-summer through frost, watch for visiting hummingbirds, which adore the nectar-rich flowers. Large, lance-shaped foliage makes a bold impact in the garden. Plant in masses at the back of borders, or in containers to enhance outdoor living spaces. (Canna indica)
To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low
temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.
If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will
survive the winter temperatures in your area.
If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack
of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).
(48-60" tall x 12-24” wide) The hot red blooms of ‘The President’ canna have graced the White House gardens for years. Bold foliage adds a touch of the tropics to any garden and provides structure to perennial beds or container plantings. Cannas are often grown in large groups for a substantial impact, but also look lovely repeated through a border to provide contrast. Deadhead plants throughout the summer to keep cannas blooming their strongest. Canna indica has been cultivated in tropical America for centuries and was one of the earliest domesticated plants in the Americas. Cannas are easy to grow and widely adaptable. They prefer rich, well-drained soil, plenty of water, and sunny locations. Cannas are hardy in zones 7-10. In cooler regions, they can be grown as annuals, or brought indoors over winter before the first frost. Resistant to deer browsing.
