Pennsylvania Sedge provides lush texture for dry shade gardens. Fine low-growing foliage arches gently, giving the appearance of soft, rolling waves. Makes a lovely groundcover or lawn alternative that requires little to no mowing. Mass planting will create a cool, glossy green carpet that is tough and versatile. Semi-evergreen foliage is deer resistant and low maintenance. (Carex pennsylvanica)

Description

Unlike most sedges which thrive in moist soils, Pennsylvania Sedge prefers dry to average soils with good drainage. However, plants do tolerate wet soils, making them ideal for any shady garden. Native to North American oak savannahs and dry woodlands, Pennsylvania Sedge makes a perfect partner for oak trees. Plants spread slowly through rhizomes, but are not overly aggressive. A good choice for erosion control and waterwise gardening. Plant in the wildlife garden to provide shelter and attract birds that feed on seeds.

Pennsylvania Sedge was featured as a top performer in a Mt Cuba Center Trial Garden Research Report. These reports evaluate native plants and related cultivars for horticultural and ecological value, highlighting the ecosystem services they provide.
