Plant Information

It's easy to see how this wildflower got its common name. The flowers are arrayed on a tall stem, they are star shaped, and they're pointed straight down. The whole plant is handsome, with flowers ranging from white to pink, and it’s dependably perennial, even in the coldest climates.

Shooting Star seeds prefers moist, cold stratification. Mix the seed with damp sawdust, vermiculite or sand and place in a refrigerator at 32-36º F for 30 days. This will break seed dormancy and increase the germination rate. Moist stratification is not necessary when planting in the fall.

    • Needs Cold Stratification

Comments about American Meadows Shooting Star Seeds:

I bought a packet of seeds and was so disappointed that none of them germinated. The pkt said they had been cold stratified already to insure fast germination, but I had absolutely no success simply planting the seeds in peat pellets within a covered flat. When I contacted American Meadows to report problems and to inquire about cold-stratification, AM sent me replacement pkt of seeds and later emailed instructions. I tested the replacement pkt of seeds in the same way that I test all seeds I buy. I used peat pellets in a covered flat, but none germinated. So, I followed the instructions for cold stratification with the remainder of the packet. I used a mixture of vermiculite and sand wetted but not so much that I could squeeze water from it. I added these teeny seeds to the mixture, placed it in a plastic ziploc baggy and stored it in the refrigerator for 1 month. I removed the baggy a week or so ago, and spread the mixture on top of potting soil mix, and within days I have oodles of sprouts. I am simply amazed. I am also uncertain what to do with this mixture next, as I have always used covered flats with cells to germinate seeds in their own precise growing cubicle when I am not using wildflower seeds that I just broadcast upon outdoor soil. Now, I have all of these sprouts growing together on a larger surface. I presume I will need to carefully remove them and pot them in their own cells when they are large enough to handle, and I can see that this will be a tedious process. If shooting star fails for me this time, it will be due to my lack of expertise handling the seedlings and not because of germination problems. I am simply amazed to have experienced success with cold stratification, as I have never tried it before. I am also impressed with American Meadows. The company honored its guarantee, stood by its product, and even educated me on how to achieve success with a second trial. I would indeed recommend buying these seeds if you are willing to cold stratify them before planting. I would most certainly recommend American Meadows to a friend, because their products have typically be good quality performers, and because they have always honored their product guarantee for the few things that I have had problems with. I have had few problems.

    No luck germinating these

      • No germination

Comments about American Meadows Shooting Star Seeds:

I've had no luck germinating this seed. One seed almost germinated, then it died. I'll keep trying, but so far, it's below American Meadows usual standard.

        Nontrivial to Germinate

        from Laurel, MD

Comments about American Meadows Shooting Star Seeds:

Since American Meadows' seed packets do not include plant-specific germination instructions (and I was too lazy to look some up), I have had trouble germinating these seeds. However, I did some searching and discovered that they germinate best when sowed on the soil surface and kept at 50 degrees. Most of the other seeds I bought from AM germinated fine (the other two that didn't are apparently also finicky germinators), so I'm sure these seeds will also do well once I stop mistreating them.

        Q & A

        Plant With These:

        USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

        • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
        • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).
