With a little deadheading, Gallardia Arizona Red Shades will bloom all summer long, providing vibrant color to almost any perennial garden. Like all Gaillardia, this variety thrives in full sun and tolerates most soil types. It is unappealing to deer and rabbits, but attracts pollinators to the garden all season long. A dwarf variety, Arizona Red Shades grows to be only 12” tall and makes for the perfect border plant, container perennial, or small space staple. We love Gaillardia because it is so easy to grow and works really well in hard-to-maintain areas of our gardens.

Plant Information

The Gaillardias are one of the great glories of American wildflowers, carpeting whole landscapes to the horizon in the plains states and the west. The natives are the famous yellow and white pinwheel bi-colors. In our wildflower seed department, we sell the much-loved annual, Indian Blanket, and the native perennial as well, G. aristata, often called Blanket Flower.

But hybridizers are always anxious to improve native plants, no matter how beautiful they may be. And in this case, they have. Goblin is one of the oldest, and still probably the most popular hybrid, with very large flowers and a long bloom season.

Many other newer hybrids emphasize one color or the other--the red or the yellow. And in very recent years, even the flower form has changed.

Comments about American Meadows Gaillardia Arizona Red Shades:

I purchased 3 of these plants to fill in a few clear spots in my flower bed. All 3 started blooming very soon after planting, in fact, I recall 2 of the plants have buds on them when they arrived. As I said, all 3 grew and started blooming in no time, but 1 of the plants just died off on me. I still gave this plant 5 stars though as the other 2 thrived throughout the summer till first hard freeze in Wisconsin. Many compliments on these, pictures will be from different times of the year as I photographed them often throughout the season.

First try for Gaillardia and I wish I'd purchased a whole lot more plants. These flowers are hardy and so cheerful! And rabbits don't eat them!

Comments about American Meadows Gaillardia Arizona Red Shades:

I love the fact that they keep blossoming all summer. It seems that most of flowers in my perennial garden are early bloomers and I was looking for something to go later in the summer. These did the trick.

            Q & A

            Plant With These:

            USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

            • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
            • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).
