Elegant 'Gracillimus' Miscanthus Grass, or Maiden Grass, is a classic ornamental grass. It forms a tall, rounded mound of thin, variegated foliage, topped by feathery copper blooms in late summer to mid-autumn. Excellent as a privacy screen or architectural landscape element, 'Gracillimus' can grow to be 8 tall and 5 wide. While it prefers full sun and moist soil, this Maiden Grass tolerates a variety of conditions, including humidity. Foliage turns from silver-green to bronze as winter approaches. USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

  • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
  • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).

Plant Information
60-96" (5-8ft) tall x 36-60" (3-5ft) wide. 'Gracillimus' Miscanthus Grass creates a well-shaped plant of leaves about 5-8 feet tall, and flowering stalks that usually reach about seven feet. Erect flowers shine in the summer sun, then coppery red plumes open in mid-autumn, creating a great show in the garden. Foliage holds up well throughout the winter, and plumes turn soft and fluffy, persisting beautifully in dried arrangements. The clump-forming habit makes Miscanthus Grass an excellent choice for formal, structured plantings and natural looking landscapes as well. Plant in a sunny position in the landscape. This grass is deer resistant and will attract birds. Let foliage stand for winter habitat and visual interest and cut back to 2-3 inches above ground in early  spring before new growth begins.
