Maiden Grass ‘Gracillimus’ is a tall, ornamental grass that forms a globe-like mound of thin, variegated foliage and copper blooms. Excellent as a privacy screen or architectural landscape element, ‘Gracillimus’ can grow to be 8’ tall and 5’ wide. While it prefers full sun and moist soil, this Maiden Grass tolerates a variety of conditions, including humidity. Foliage turns from silver green to bronze as winter approaches. Plant Information

This old-time classic garden ornamental creates a well-shaped plant of leaves about 5-8 ft. tall, and flowering stalks that usually reach about seven feet. Coppery red plumes open in mid-autumn, creating a great show in the garden.

About Miscanthus hybrids: Our friend, Jack Scheper, the plant expert who runs Floridata.com, tell us that there are now hundreds of cultivars of this handsome grass. He says What they have in common are a clump forming habit (never forming turf), in which the leaves grow up then cascade out and down like a fountain; foliage that turns various shades of gold or bronze in autumn and holds up well throughout the winter; erect flowers that shine in the summer sun, then turn soft and fluffy in winter, and persist beautifully in dried arrangements; and a preference for sunny positions in the landscape.

Q & A

Plant With These:

USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

  • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
  • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).
