Purple Gem' Dahlia is indeed a shining gem of the border. Its violet-pink blooms are packed with layers of slender, tapered petals that glow in the summer sun. A cactus-type dahlia, 'Purple Gem' is among the most-vibrant varieties on the market. It looks extra sassy when combined with yellow zinnias, blue cornflowers, and red salvias. (Dahlia)

Description

With a bloom span of 6 inches and knock-out coloration, Dahlia 'Purple Gem' is an excellent choice for admiring from both near and far. The bold color of this dahlia means it's easily seen from one end of the block to the other. Deer resistant and practically bug-proof, the lush foliage of 'Purple Gem' is almost as attractive as the flowers. Requiring little input, apart from a sunny site and regular irrigation, this dahlia is a non-stop summertime bloomer and makes a dapper cut flower.

Dahlias are perennial in zones 8-10, but in cooler zones, tubers can be dug after frost comes, stored over winter, then re-planted the following spring. Grow Dahlias in a sunny spot, in average soil that drains well. Keep moisture consistent once it begins to grow and enjoy a non-stop color parade. Deadhead spent blooms to encourage more flowers and pinch off small side buds to encourage larger flowers if desired.
