Description
'Bluebird' Smooth Aster is a workhorse of the late summer to fall garden, with pale blue 1-inch flowers that cover the plant in color, feeding pollinators and birds as they prepare for winter. Good for cut flowers too. Asters thrive in average soil and are drought tolerant once established. Plant them in a sunny spot and water moderately until well established. Native to midwestern North America, they are easy to grow, with no need for special fertilizers or care. For maximum flowers and a denser habit, simply pinch the branches back in the spring. They will gradually grow to 36-48" tall in masses up to 30" wide creating a fall focal point in the garden. Divide Asters every 2-3 years to keep flowers blooming. Plant them near Echinacea or Delphinium where they can continue the bloom parade once the summer flowers have faded.
