Description
(72-96” tall x 36-48” wide) A native shrub with three-season interest and a strong root system for holding tough spots, 'Brilliantissima' Red Chokeberry, or Aronia, provides a beautiful solution for rain gardens and areas prone to erosion. The oval leaves unfurl in medium green, growing darker as the season progresses, until the cool nights of autumn change them into a brilliant, fiery red. The improved cultivar offers white flowers, dense summer foliage, and autumn fruit and color to enliven garden beds and borders. This graceful shrub is denser and more compact than the species, with larger flowers in early spring that yield larger fruit in autumn – which birds will love. Plant in full sun to partial shade. 'Brilliantissima' can tolerate periods of drought as well as periods of flooding, but prefers a moisture retentive well-drained soil on the acidic side. A native beauty that is beloved by deer – so some measure of protection must be provided.
