Description
4-6” tall x 8-10" wide and spreading. The evergreen rosettes of Kalinda Hens and Chicks (Sempervivum) bring unique texture to gardens and containers. These versatile beauties blend seamlessly into rock gardens, succulent gardens, and Mediterranean plantings. Tuck plants along the edges of a stone walkway for a unique groundcover or plant as a part of a living wall or green roof. Plants are exceptionally easy to grow provided they have a well-drained soil and plenty of sunshine. Plants are drought tolerant once established and not bothered by deer or rabbits. The common name hens and chicks describes the interesting growth habit. Mature rosettes or “hens” produce a ring of tiny new rosette “chicks” each spring. These baby “chicks” can be moved to expand the planting, or remain in place to form undulating mounds. Once mature, mother hens flower and die, leaving room for her chicks to grow. Bygone rosettes can be removed after flowering by gently pulling at the base.
