Money plant's flowers are striking in the spring garden, but the name alludes to the round, flat seedpods that resemble coins. It's botanical name, Lunaria (as in "lunar") comes from their resemblance to the moon.
Money plant is a biennial, meaning it grows leaves the first year and flowers the second. After flowering, it dies. However, it readily reseeds itself to create a permanent stand. (If you don't want lots of seedlings, just cut off the seedpods.) It prefers part shade and moist soil.

"Planted seeds about 4 years ago and am so happy with yearly results…beautiful purple flowers in the spring and pods forming in the summer. One of my favorite additions for cut flowers in late summer."
"Too early to evaluate. These plants are biannuals and won't bloom till next year. Check back then!"
"Bought for my wife as she wanted a row of these along a wall. great seed quality and a whole lot more came up than I expected. takes 2 years for flowers but so far the plants are great"
"I spread these on an empty bank Fall 2011 and they came up to about 6 inches. I mulched them over for the winter and this spring I was the envy of the whole neighborhood- they grew over 2 feet high. Not only did I have seeds for next year but I had the stems with empty seed pods for dried arrangements. VERY HAPPY :)"
"A friend of mine gave me several small plants 2 years ago and what a beautiful addition to my garden! They are in full bloom now and just a delight. For me, I don't care where they pop up at but people are more particular. But I figure if that is where God wants them to grow, who am I to doubt it. I love these flowers!"
"spread these last fall 2011 on a bare embankment between properties and have bloomed wonderfully- all the neighbors want seeds now so I purchased another 1/4 pound. Absolutely love these. Very easy to grow- spread it and forget it !"
