"I got this grass for several shady areas in my yard where nothing else would grow. It grows well in partial shade but not in deep shade. It's got an attractive airy feeling from a distance but as you can see in the pictures, because it grows in clumps it's a little uneven. It does not need frequent mowing, which is another advantage. I would recommend it for shady areas and I would also recommend seeding as soon as the ground is thawed so that it will start before the leaves come out on the trees. The more sun early on, the better. Once established, it's fine."
"I chose Chewings Fescue because I had a very shady (high trees) area with poor soil. I did a lot of soil prep, including adding lime and some top soil, then spread the seed by hand and put straw on it. I watered regularly, and it worked beautifully! Some areas still coming in, but you can see what a nice, fine, bright green grass this is, and how shady the area is."
"The seed has been planted for about two weeks and the grass is more than 1/2 inch tall."
"The seed sprouted quickly in the shady parts of my lawn that were always bare. The grass grew quite well, but was very fine in texture. After a month or two, all of the new grass had burned and turned brown. I recently re-seeded those areas with same type of fescue and I'm hoping it will do better."
"Planted in the fall. Came up nicely to form a lush lawn. We are in the middle of a really harsh winter, for zone 7, and it still looks good. Can't wait to see how it looks in the spring. It definately preferred some shade as it was germinating."
"After a month long project by our pool, the shady hillside next to it was nothing but clay and shale. Rain started making ruts in the wasteland, and we were at a loss about what to do. We decided to buy a few pounds of fescue and broad-casted it over the entire area. Then we spread straw to keep everything stable. We had grass growing in a little over a week. Once this frigid weather leaves and spring arrives, we can't wait to see how well it survived."
