The evening primroses are a group of yellow-flowered plants that range from short “sundrops” to the tall ones like this species. Unlike the roadside weed, Oenothera biennis, O. lamarckiana makes a good meadow plant. Flowers open in the afternoon and are closed by morning. See related species—the ground-hugging, very large-flowered Missouri Primrose, O. missouriensis and the famous pink-flowered Showy Evening Primrose, O. speciosa.

"I selected a large area of the front lawn and planted both a Northeast mix, as well as a Perennial mix. Lots of interesting flowers, but none as great as these. Open at dusk, close in the sun. Hummingbirds enjoy them early in the morning."
"Like another reviewer, I wondered if these large green plants in my third year after initial sowing of the Mid-West Pollinator Mix were weeds. The app I used indicated not, so I let them grow. . . and grow. . . to over 6' tall green bushy plants. The Japanese beetles flocked to them, so I was not impressed during the green growing stage. I tried Neem oil as a deterent, but that seemed to be all it did. However now in Iowa/mid August, they have bloomed to be attractive in the mornings, and today we had a welcome visitor to the blooms too. So in hindsight, I'm glad I did not pull them out when the beetles were active!"

"When this plant first came up this spring, I thought it might be a weed. I decided to wait and see what it looked. So glad I did. The yellow flowers on the branches open up in the evening and almost glow on a night with a full moon. I really enjoyed watching it grow and bloom. Now that it is August and the bloom time is nearing its end, seeds are being produced. The plant is full of gold finches that look almost like large blooms. I had to do a double take. I am hoping the goldfinches spread the seed far and wide for more beautiful plants in my area. There are huge natural areas near my house because I live near a park."

"Planted seeds 2 years ago along our pond embankment and in a wilflower bed near our patio with great success. Plants continue to reseed themselves to the delight of our grandchildren who enjoy watching the blossoms open as the late afternoon sun melds to twilight. Would make an excellent plant for patio containers as well."
