Description
Pure white Carnegie has a special quality many gardeners really love. It is much more perennial than most of the group, and in fact, last year, it won a coveted spot in the top five hyacinths tested by Cornell University in several locations for 'staying power.' Carnegie returned faithfully in upstate New York, and even in the South, for at least three straight years. That's a big deal for a hyacinth.
Daffodils may be the symbol of spring. Tulips add dramatic color. But its the hyacinths that bring the perfume. One of the most powerfully fragranced blooms in the flower kingdom is the justly famous Dutch hyacinth--the result of hundreds of years of hybridizing a lovely little wildflower from Turkey--now an upright torch of incredible color and unmatched perfume.
Plant your hyacinth bulbs close together for a dramatic display, either in groups of one color or as a rainbow of several shades. Many gardeners think they look best in close groups of 3, 5 or more. Hyacinths must have good drainage, so be sure to plant them where they'll never be in standing water. With some shade, the flowers will last longer than in full sun. And next spring, don't forget to stop and smell the hyacinths!

Not as Full in Partial Shade
"I purchased a bag of these white hyacinths on a half-off sale a couple years ago. I planted them in a partially shaded area between my herbaceous peonies. This is the second season they've bloomed, although they're not as full as in the promotional photos. All 6, however, have come up again, so at least the growth is one hundred percent success! I suspect if I had planted them in full sun they'd be a lot happier, but at least I get to have some version of these fragrant, pretty flowers around!"

"I originally bought these bulbs for their beauty, but I will be re-ordering more because of their heavenly fragrance! I planted these bulbs by my patio, and now that the weather is warming, I'm sitting out back more. Today I kept smelling the most enchanting fragrance. I couldn't figure out where it was coming from. I finally realized it was the hyacinth. It's beautiful and will bring a nice perfumed delight when the wind blows. These are perfect! I'm definitely ordering more."

"Only 1 failed to come up. 11 out of 12 is great in my book. They came up unexpected. . . I suppose I lost time or they were a little earlier than I thought . Looking forward to other 'white' flowers that I can add in this vicinity next to the old smoke house. Close by there is an old walnut tree, about 100 years old, that I have my hosta ' that bloom in the fall. It makes a nice garden area to visit at various times of the year."

"I planted these bulbs in two separate containers, so that I can move them around when they bloomed. All 6 bulbs bloomed for me although one of them bloomed at the soil level and didn't grow like the rest of the bulbs. I had to discarded that one bulb away. Love the white flowers and their fragrance. I'd definitely buy them again."
