Our Low Work and Water Dwarf Fescue Grass Seed Mix is the solution for a low-maintenance drought tolerant lawn. This is a cool season grass mix, featuring two dwarfed tall fescue grasses - Birmingham Tall Fescue and Memphis Tall Fescue, each developed to have a short habit.
These grasses were developed to quickly green up in spring, and they have exceptional disease and insect resistance. They were developed in hot climates, where they provide excellent density in summer and for keeping a dark green color. It has excellent resistance to diseases and pests. Fescue grasses have deep fibrous roots; this helps to increase its durability in high traffic areas. Dense, deep roots also create a drought tolerant lawn; Low Work and Water turf typically only needs about 4” of rain per month, requiring little additional irrigation, except during dry spells without summer rains. For a more manicured look, it can be cut once every four to six weeks to a height of 3" to 4". This grass mix can tolerate shade; in summer or anytime the average temperature is above 80°F, it should be kept at 3″ or taller to prevent the ends from rusting or burning.
This mix is suited for a wide range of the United States and is best for all but the hottest extremes (See recommended planting area map in product photos). Low Work and Water is best sown in March through early May, or late August through September. This grass grows best at and around 70°F.

"This is our third or fourth time buying fescue from American Meadows. We love this grass! It’s our yearly go to’ we over seed our fescue yearly and have had wonderful growth with this seed! It’s beautiful!"
"Grrat service, communication and education"
"""Low Work and Water Dwarf Fescue"" is incredible after only 3 weeks! Color is incredible emerald green. First lawn seed I've purchased that did not contain weeds. Started lawn at end of September with unusual 95-107 degree days. Frequent watering (4x per day) and seedlings were visible by 10 days. By 21-25th day is thick in most areas despite fact that dozens of pigeons appeared the first week eating my new seed. Applied at rate of 10lbs/1,000 soft. Beautiful look… just what I wanted. Fine texture and easy (so far) to maintain. Congratulations and thanks to American Meadows for their superior quality grass seed."
"I had a site prepared- no grass for 9 months, just dirt. I planted a mix of this and white clover. One of the grasses in this mix is NOT low work. It is light green and grows like a weed- outpacing the other grass in the mix (which died out almost immediately). It needs constant mowing and is ugly since it sprouts as a clump and looks choppy even when mowed. I contacted customer service, asking them why there is an aggressive tall grass in something advertised a low work. The pictures and description certainly didn't reflect this. I was told it is a dwarf fescue and that is would reach several feet ?! unless I kept it mowed. I was also told I was lucky it wasn't regular fescue or it would reach 4 feet tall. And that most people don't mow it, they just let it flop over and make a flowy effect (!?). I dunno who these ,'most people' are, but that seems insane to me in a suburban yard . The response was flippant and rude. Now I'm stuck removing everything and starting over again. The goal all along was to replace the fast-growing old grass, and now I'm right back where I started. They refused any refund based on the fact that the grass grew."
"This is the best lawn seed mixed with micro clover provides a habitat for the bees and little work for me! I prefer to water and spend my time working in my vegetable garden and flowers. This low maintenance lawn is just right for my family. #sweepstakes"
"It is definitely slow growing, as advertised. I planted it in early spring and it's still working its way up to normal mowing height (I mow at about 3-3. 5 inches). Not sure if our extra wet spring is helping or hurting it, but regardless, it seems to be what it was advertised to be. Very Happy! I have only used half the bag thus far, but have many more patch areas to address, so it will go to good use. Eventually, i hope to have my entire yard replanted, but am allowing natural die off of the previous lawn to create new planting opportunities. I have had lots of great successes with American Meadows seed products and look forward to many more successful planting years. Sorry, big box stores--American Meadows has a far superior product; designed for the new climate future."
"This stuff grows great in my high-shade areas, and it survives on a south facing slope, in full sun, through the heat of a Virginia summer (note that I do keep that area watered). In the heat of the summer, if you can live with your grass at about 6"" tall, you don't really need to mow this stuff, so it stays alive while all of the neighborhood tall fescue in full sun dies. It may not look like turf grass, but it keeps my soil from washing away in areas that previously were erosion problems for me."
"I bought these seeds to fill in bare spots and overseed my existing lawn. I did an application by hand in April (zone 6a) and by July I have a lush, beautiful lawn. It's been a wet spring and summer so that helped establish it, but I don't think it would have been hard to do without natures boost."
"In spite of proper watering through sprinkler system, and good amount of sunshine, none of the grass I planted in various areas of my yard, germinated or group at all. Very disappointing. In contrast, the microclover I planted at the same time did very well."
"I live in Santa Fe New Mexico, environment is high desert (7,150 ft. ) less than 10"" rain per year. I had several baren area patches in my yard, planted this drought hardy fescue, covered with 1/4 top soil, watered daily for 2 weeks, grass came up. I kept watering regularly for 2 months, to give roots time to establish. I can tell now that this grass will all die by this fall if I don't water every other day. I am going back to Blue Grama, very disappointed."
