The glorious large-flowered purple (rarely pink) aster that is the grandparent of many garden hybrids, New England aster is one of the top colormakers for a late fall meadow. When other flowers are gone, it is at its peak. Seed is costly since it is produced so late in the season, it is hard to collect in quantity.

"I sprinkled some seeds in the spring of 2021 in a garden bed. By the end of summer 2023, I have a beautiful patch of bright purple flowers that add so much color late in the season. It is always humming with pollinators and also works wonderfully in bouquets. The plants are tall and should be planted at the back of the bed with some shorter perennials in front if you want some extra support but I just let mine go wild."
