How do we use your location?
Knowing your location helps us recommend plants that will thrive in your climate, based on your Growing Zone.
Agapanthus is an ancient plant with a handful of common names - African Lily, Lily of the Nile, Blue African Lily and The Flower of Love among them. Native to South Africa, this lovely perennial flower produces globe shaped blooms in violet-blue, each composed of several smaller, star-shaped flowers. Similar to ornamental onion (allium) blooms, but looser and softer.
This plant can take plenty of heat, and will tolerate some shade - but it must have plenty of moisture and should not be allowed to dry out. Otherwise easy to grow, and very resistant to pests and disease.
As soon as your order is placed you will receive a confirmation email. You will receive a second email the day your order ships telling you how it has been sent. Some perennials are shipped as potted plants, some as perennial roots packed in peat. The ‘Plant Information’ section describes how that item will ship. All perennials and fall-planted bulbs are packaged to withstand shipping and are fully-guaranteed. Please open upon receipt and follow the instructions included.
Perennials and fall-planted bulbs are shipped at the proper planting time for your Growing Zone. Perennial and fall-planted bulb orders will arrive separately from seeds. If your order requires more than one shipment and all items are shipping to the same address, there is no additional shipping charge. See our shipping information page for approximate ship dates and more detailed information. If you have any questions, please call Customer Service at (802) 227-7200 or contact us by email or chat.

"As I read these reviews it is obvious many don't do their research. If you grow an African Lily from seed, expect about 5 years for the first bloom. When you get the split roots like these, they rarely bloom the first year. If you know your plants, then set expectations appropriately & don't write bad reviews for sellers because you don't know what to expect."
"I bought these for the summer of 2022. Nothing but green leaves both years now, no blooms at all and they are small did not grow any larger the next year. I brought them in the garage last winter and they did grow new leaves but no blooms either."
"I have (3) plants in a two containers. Only one bloom. It is the beginning of August. I have been growing them since I received them in the mail."
"I bought some plants years ago and had been dividing them for years and now I have added a whole beautiful row of them to my driveway. These truce and are hardy. They bloom once a year and are big and beauty. They are a show stopper for all that enter our yard. I love them and will continue to divide them for years to come. Thank you American meadows for all the years of beautiful flowers and fruit trees. I did buy raspberries blueberries and grapes which also do well because of our higher altitude and cold seasons. Your company is the greatest. Even your customer service when a few of my plant didn't make it you replaced them. It's service like this that keeps me coming to your site. God bless"
"I already have 2 pots full of Lily of the Nile. I was expecting something different from African Lily. Yours is still alive, so I will have 3 pots full of Lily of the Nile."
"All six plants look healthy but still quite small. May be 2016 before I get to judge fairly. too soon to tell"
"Very nice bulbs arrived with little shoots coming out. I planted them in two planters and kep the soil t well watered, part sun, part shade, and covered in moss. It took a full year, but we are seeing hardy plants with blooms just about to burst. Very excited!"
"This is an amazing plant given the proper environment. In California and Hawaii this is a go to choice for long borders or in large pots. It must have loose reasonably neutral 7. 5 to acid 6. 5 soil. Snails will walk a mile for this plant. . . they can hide deep in the leaves or under them. Ph is critical for most plants. Agapanthus will not do well in clay or alkaline soil. I think Allium is a better choice for colder zones. Very similar in appearance."
"I got these to use in pots - as I have had some in the ground(not from American Meadows). . . . One of the 3 bloomed this year, but they were just getting started. . . I'll store them - in the pot - in my heated basement this winter. . . . and hopefully another year of root growth will make them be more prolific next summer."
"I ordered a packet of three African Lilies. One of the plants didn't survive, and the other two did poorly. I reported this to American Meadows, and they refunded the purchase immediately. I will definitely do business with them again!"
