How do we use your location?
Knowing your location helps us recommend plants that will thrive in your climate, based on your Growing Zone.
36-48" tall, 24-30" wide. Asclepias syriaca is very familiar to many eastern gardeners. This perennial is perfect as a filler between your taller perennials and adds a nice touch of fragrance mid-late summer. The foliage is thick and glossy so it adds texture to help your garden look more lush even in the peak of the summer! Native to he US from Canada to Georgia, and west to Texas. Reseeds in fall but is very easy to harvest. Clip off the seed pods before they open to help control growth but be sure to leave the foliage! Common Milkweed is vital for the survival of the Monarch Butterfly which their population has been in a slow decline over the years. Watch as the eggs hatch and larvae grow into the signature yellow striped caterpillars. Planting this perennial is a wonderful way to bring more excitement to your garden while also helping our native pollinators to thrive! ("Butterfly Weed" is a close relative, with bright orange flowers.)

"I have purchased several types of milkweed from American Meadows and have had really good luck with the plants. My monarch way station was destroyed in May by a severe hail storm. Some of the plants were literally beat down into the ground. I kept watering them and applying miracle grow and now my milk weed is so healthy and thick. I found my very first monarch caterpillar several days ago and I now currently have 4. I'm so excited and thank American Meadows for always sending the best plants. I have seldom received plants that aren't very healthy but even the few that weren't, always ended up being beautiful. I highly recommend American Meadows and their customer service and plant information are wonderful."
"I like the beauty of the common milkweed. Pink and white attracts bees and butterflies. Monarchs are a wonder to watch. I enjoy different swamp weed colors but the Incarnata is a favorite. Best to plant in an area that's wetter."
"I bought seeds and before planting did some research. The key to success is that seeds need to be chilled. I placed mine in the freezer last summer and after a week removed them and planted them in a flat. Last fall I planted them outside in new pollinator bed and they have all come up. Can't wait to see how popular it will be among butterflies, bees and hummingbirds. and bees So many sprouted that I gave away all those that I didn't need."
"My potted plants arrived in excellent condition, well packaged, healthy plants. Can't wait to start our Monarch butterfly garden!"
"I have bought several of the common milkweed plants from American Meadows over the years and I have never been disappointed with the results. I am happy to be patient the first year that I plant them when I know they are going to be amazing the next! I just love these plants and love helping our pollinators! All monarch butterflies welcome to come feast!"
"The plants came very healthy. Americanmeadows ships their products the best I have seen, ordering through the mail !! Great quality."
"Healthier than indigenous, no spiders, when given a choice in captivity larvae caterpillars prefer these plants. More drought tolerant than indigenous. Thoroughly enjoyed raising monarch, I am hooked!!!!!!!!! THANKS"
"Ordered a flat. yeah, a few didn't make it in shipping, however the rare find, potted milkweed, was glad to just get started on butterfly garden rather than complain. So today I had my first monarch lay eggs. It was a blessed event. Funny, they have not been laying on indigenous milkweed in garden. THANK YOU so much for offering this plant!!!!!!!!! I called many places, sed difficult to grow. . . Will keep you posted. see pic Krista"
"Monarchs on milkweed again this mornin, didn't get pic of butterflies, just wanted to show you the beautiful blooms, first year! thanks"
"When I first got these they were a bit of a mess. We planted them, watched, watered, fed, and watched some tiny little leaves come out. This year, they grew like crazy!! They are tall, majestic beauties with pink flowers coming out on the tops. I guess that we are giving better food, and it has not been as searingly hot as it was last year. I was very pleasantly surprised. If I had room I would get more!"
