About Astilbes: Easy to grow, tough and hardy, Astilbes are now a mainstay in all good perennial gardens. In fact, American gardeners are in the midst of a passionate love affair with Astilbes. Native to the far east, these beautiful plants and their hybrids have revolutionized the perennial possibilities of moist, shaded American gardens. They are companions of ferns and our favorite annuals, impatiens--one of the few flowers that make big color in full or partial shade.
The vast majority of the scores of hybrids now available are the work of one man, master hybridizer Georg Arends (Yes, that's why you keep seeing arendsii tacked onto hybrid names.) Mr. Arends, working in Ronsdorf, Germany spent decades hybridizing Sedums, Phlox, Campanulas....and his first love, Astilbes. In 1933, Arends introduced 74 different Astilbe cultivars, and there have been hundreds since.
These plume-flowered plants have ultra-handsome fern-like foliage, (usually dark glossy green) and stiff stems that always hold the elegant plumes aloft without any staking. Flower arrangers find the flower plumes are just as handsome in a vase as in a garden.
From tiny dwarfs to big draping hybrids, Astilbes are all quite easy to grow, as long as their ground does not dry out for long. They must have plenty of moisture, so choose your locations carefully.

"I bought a couple of plants probably 6 years ago from American Meadow s. Since then I have divided the astilbes and they are thriving in my shady bed. This variety blooms in early to mid summer for me in Westchester, NY."
"Only included 2 roots, not 3. Otherwise healthy, sprouted fast, and growing well."
"Great beginning for my new wildflower bed"
"All three plants are growing well. They are true to color as indicated in the photo. Only drawback is that they did not put on much growth this year. However, they are hardy and I believe they will be fine next year."
"THE PLANT IS SMALL. I AM STILL WAITING FOR IT TO FLOWER. I HAVE FOLLOWED ALL PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS. ITS IS NOTHING MORE THAN A WEED TO ME. YOU HAVE GOT ME ON THIS ONE. OMAR"
"Ordered 6 bareroots, they arrived and looked so healthy, wish I had taken pictures when they arrived but I forgot. We actually ordered 10 bareroot of the amethyst variety from another provider and they paled in comparison to the 6 Deutschland variety from American meadows. We immediately unpacked, and soaked in water for about 30min prior to planting, not bc the roots were dry just bc this is what had been recommended to me. We planted with bio-tone starter straight into our native Illinois soil, watered in well, and then mulched. In just a few days, 2 had leaves, 10 days, and all 6 have leaves. I will also admit that mother nature has been doing her part, we have had the perfect spring weather for them, raining every 3-4 days temps between 50-75. If you are curious we treated the 10 amethyst, from bee-recks the same. They were about half to a quarter the size on average, and i would say half were dry upon arrival. They were planted a day later only bc they arrived a day later, and 3 of those 10 have leaves after 9 days in, still holding out hope for the others but i dont have the confidence in them that i now have for the American meadows bareroots. Would absolutely purchase again and recommend!"
"Great for shady area on north side of house"
"Unfortunately, none of the Deutschland Astilbes have survived. Whether they failed to survive what has been a difficult season - they just did not either take root, perhaps additionally dug up by the darn squirrels or had a very short life despite being in moist, well drained cool shady conditions in zone 7A. I was really disappointed, but not discouraged - maybe I will plant again in the fall."
"I purchased on sale at end of season. All plants are doing well. Helpful that I had a location ready when plants arrived and put them in within 24 hours of receiving."
"I only see 1 plant and there were wasn't a bloom on it this year. I will wait a year and see what happens."
