The Magic: How the Butterfly Bush works: Buddleia or Butterfly Bush has been a sensation in American gardens for years, and no wonder. This plant is easy to grow, blooms profusely, and has that magical quality: Butterflies can’t resist it.
Here's why: It’s not just the pretty flowers that attract the butterflies, like any bright flower. Buddleias emit a special honey-scented fragrance that lures butterflies like a moth to a light, and then once there, they find the flowers super-rich in nectar.
A butterfly bush in the garden will often be seen with a mass of butterflies on the flowers, especially during hot sunny afternoons. Buddleias attract other insects too, like moths, and the reddish ones strongly attract hummingbirds. So it’s more than a name; it’s actually a botanical phenomenon. As soon as your order is placed you will receive a confirmation email. "I use it in the back yard butterfly garden. This one looked great in the picture, and when it arrived it had the same magnificent color on the buds, but it seemed flimsy. . . . frail. Time goes by, a little mulch for fall, and Spring sprung. . . . and my buddleia was dead. I must say that the 2 poppy plants and the phlox plant from the same order are great, but my prize color bush was dead. . . . whoopie!?"
"I find Butterfly Bushes so dreamy, so last year, I ordered one to add to my garden. It grew substantially in its first year, which I was super impressed by. Well, in its second year, I am blown away. Not only is it what I would consider a substantial size for a shrub in its second year, but it has been exploding with blooms for the last month. Gorgeous and Hardy! I highly recommend it, especially if you are trying to build a pollinator oasis in your backyard."
"I am on a quest for a beautiful yard that doesn't need much maintenance but attracts all kinds of butterflies and hummingbirds. So I purchased two of these butterfly bushes and they did splendidly. This spring I trimmed them a little late and the one didn't come back quite like I desired, but I'll prune earlier next year so it comes back. My next quest is to try to propagate them so I can give them to my neighbor to get extra butterflies to both of our yards!"
"Both arrived very dry six days after shipping. Transplanted immediately. The one on the right did not make it. Hoping the one on the left does."
"It was small but it was also heathy and growing. I planted at my cottage and it seems to be growing already. Yes i would buy again."
"The color is exactly as advertised. The plant has grown 28 inches in height and 30 inches in width since I planted it in April. I have never had hummingbirds that are attracted to a butterfly bush like this one. Wish I had more space as I would order another!"
"I love this butterfly bush. It is a beautiful color. It is still a baby. But it has lots of shoots and is obviously a healthy plant."
"The instructions were clear and results are on point."
"I planted a 3" pot from American Meadows in April. By the end of July it is 12" tall and 20" wide and flowering beautifully. Surprised growing so well in Georgia clay soil. Love the butterflies attractived to it."
"One grew and one died and was planted as instructed. The one alive this spring is struggling. I am hoping it will get a boost this summer for the 2023 summer. No blooms yet?"
