'Veitch’s Blue' Echinops (also called small globe thistle) is a unique stand out in the full-sun garden. Showy, golf ball-shaped flowers are true blue. A hardy, low maintenance plant, 'Veitch's Blue' is a great choice for dry soils and low rainfall areas, becoming drought-tolerant after reaching maturity. (Echinops ritro)

Only one bloom so far

"This is my first year growing echinops but I was hoping for more blooms."

Pleasantly surprised

"I bought these as fillers for some planters I have, thought the unique flowers would be a good contrast. The bulbs took well in containers in the spring and I have a beautiful echinop flowering already. Only con is that the first sprout looked like weeds coming in and I was very tempted to pluck it out, but give it time!"

do yourself a favor and only buy one!

"I bought two of these a couple years back and they established quickly. What I didn't know is that these are aggressive self-seeders! I have sprouts of these plants ALL OVER my garden! I'm not mad, but impressed. So, don't worry about buying a bunch, just let the plant seed at the end of the season and you'll be in business. I must have 40 of these around the yard. Pretty impressive from two little plants."

Still waiting

"Grew to nice looking plants, good leaf spread - but again, no stalks nor blooms. I'm in zone 3-4 so less time to grow. Maybe blooms next year."

Cam (3/5)

100% Grew

"All three roots grew. I didn't get flowers the first year, but did not expect any. They overwintered in zone 5 and all have come back this spring. I hope to get some flowers this year!"

Pretty, when it can grow

"The plants I received were very healthy and started growing really fast- even with minimal watering. I am very sad to report that only one bloom survived the critters though. Maybe not deer, but something loves to eat this plant in my garden. They hardly have any leaves left. If you don't have rabbit/squirrel issues, I would highly recommend this plant, otherwise steer clear."

So Far, So Good

"Only had one bloom this first year, but the plants are doing very well."

Stunning Blue

"These are real eye catchers!! Very hearty, fast growers. Bloomed first year."
