How do we use your location?
Knowing your location helps us recommend plants that will thrive in your climate, based on your Growing Zone.
This hardy little plant is often hard to find in garden centers, but it isn’t difficult to grow – making it a uniquely easy accent for a sunny or partly-shaded spot. Strappy foliage rises to approximately six inches, then upward-facing blossoms open wide in shades of lilac-blue with a white and gold patch on the outer three petals. Like most iris, they should be planted with some of the rhizome visible above the soil in a well-draining spot. Dwarf Crested Iris is an early spring bloomer, and thus makes a wonderful companion for primroses, or ephemeral beauties such as trout lilies and trillium. It’s a vigorous spreader, and can be used very successfully as a ground cover, particularly in woodland gardens where the dagger-like foliage will not be burned by the sun. This classic, often hard-to-find North American plant is great for wild gardens.

"I planted the iris underneath a tree which offers dappled shade. It offers spring color as well as foliage interest throughout the growing season. It makes a great groundcover when it is not in bloom."
"Bought two of these to put in my woodland edge shade garden mid summer last year and they are back and have more than doubled in size. Still waiting on them to bloom but the foliage looks fantastic."
"Around trees, Landscape lining, under taller plants"
"Sadly, I was not able to plant these as directed. One must make time and treat them right. None of the bulbs came up this past spring. I believe I planted them to shallowly. I give them a 5-star because it was my own fault. I will definitely try these again!"
"I received 6 plants, planted them all in my garden, and only one is actually growing. One is barely hanging on, and the other 4 have died completely. I am pretty sad, as I love irises and wanted a shot of purple to round out the lilies I have growing as well."
"Only got 1 plant out of three bulbs. Planted last fall. Hopefully flowers next yr"
"Tucked into a small area near the driveway. Little shot of color."
"I have planted six of these in the garden and they are the perfect addition for color and size. The flower is beautiful."
"Product as arrived was rather puny. Some concern about survival, but it held up well in first-year full shade heat. Anticipating nice blooms and more growth next year."
"The all plants established well - and this spring came up MUCH bigger than last year - starting to spread a bit. As per another review, mine did not bloom this year, but they may take a bit longer to do this in the half sun/half shade area in which mine are planted. They plants are really, really healthy - if they had bloomed this year it would have been 5 stars!"
