How do we use your location?
Knowing your location helps us recommend plants that will thrive in your climate, based on your Growing Zone.
Intersectional Peonies are hybrids between woody Tree Peonies and herbaceous Garden peonies. These hybrids are relatively new creations, with the first successful intersectional crosses being made in 1948. These hybrids are called “Itoh peonies” after Mr. Toichi Itoh, a Japanese hybridizer who created the first intersectional Peony. the result is a disease resistant plant with a longer blooming season, due to their ability to produce preliminary and secondary buds once the plant is established. Its lower compact habit and sturdier stems allows it to support up to 30 flowers per well-established plant.
Intersection, or “Itoh” Peonies are very easy to grow in full sun in well-drained soil. Make sure the crowns are planted 1 to 2 inches deep and no deeper. If peonies are planted too deep, they may not bloom.

"This is an update on my post from last year. Last year, after planting the bare root quickly sent up a shoot and grew quite large. This year, it was one of my first Peonies to sprout and even put out one bud. It is gorgeous and I can not wait to see how much it grows next year. True to Itoh form, I did not need to use a Peony hoop to keep the bud from toppling. This plant is planted close to my house and I think benefits from the full sun and the heat it gets from being near the foundation. It is a pale yellow with a vibrant pink center and slight hints of pink along the edges of the petal."
"It is a bold bright plain yellow. No variation of color just bold yellow. Very disappointed I waisted this money."
"I LOVE Peonies and Itohs are great because they are more sturdy than the traditional, and have a more singular bloom. Great to add some diversity to the appearance of your Peonies. I was surprised by how quickly this bare root sprouted after planting, and by how quickly it grew in its first year. Patience is key, though, as it can take several years to see a bloom. I can't wait to see it in all its glory! (I even bought some for my sister as a housewarming gift. She is a novice gardener, so thought it would be great to give her something easy and low maintenance where she could feel the instance "success")."
"I am so pleased with this plant. It's lovely. I planted it in spring 2018 and it bloomed within a month. It has matured since then into a healthy bush. It's on the shorter side for a peony, so I would recommend it for the front of the border. It needs no staking and the foliage has always been healthy. The buds are beautiful and fat, sometimes showing a burgundy color. It is hard to find a picture of this peony to know what color it will be. As you can see, mine is definitely a yellow flower, though some of the flowers are suffused with light pink (hard to photograph). I got two of these peonies. The pictures show the one that was sited well (full sun). The other I neglected for a while before planting, then wound up putting in a shady spot. That plant did not thrive, but it also survived and sent up leaves each year. I have finally moved it to a sunny spot where it's doing great. I believe that both plants are a testament to the quality of roots I received. Very happy with this purchase. Like most peonies, this is very easy care. I gave it supplemental water its first year and have left it alone since. The rabbits don't touch it, and I never see holes from insects on the leaves. The only attention it needs is to trim the spent foliage as winter begins. Just easy and beautiful. The only "downside" is you need to be patient for it to mature. Set it and forget it!"
"Healthy tubers. I would buy from them again."
