The Mixed Wood Plains Ecoregion (Ecoregion 8.1) is an EPA Level II Ecoregion. This ecoregion crosses the northeastern and upper midwestern United States, including portions of Connecticut, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Vermont, Wisconsin, and all of Rhode Island. Large cities within the ecoregion include New York City, Boston, MA; Buffalo, NY; and Cleveland, OH. This ecoregion is distinguished by its temperate climate, with landscapes featuring flat plains, gently rolling hills, and a mosaic of deciduous and mixed forests.

A keystone species is one that has a significant influence on the diversity of other species in its environment. In terms of the plant world, keystone plants are native plants that provide essential food and shelter to support habitat for wildlife, such as birds, pollinators, and beneficial insects.
