About Hydrangeas: These popular shrubs, also called Hortensia, all have rounded flower clusters that persist through summer and fall. There are several types, since there are several species of the plant the hybridizers work with:
H. macrophylla or French Hydrangeas. These, the most popular, form non-rangy, attractive shrubs about 4 to 6 ft. tall, and are famed for their big, colorful ball-like flowers, usually blue or pink. The popular group here is called Mophead hydrangeas. Artificially shortened versions are sold in pots on Easter and Mothers Day, and the blooms are florists favorites, always popular for wedding decorations. In addition to the mopheads (solid ball of flowers), there are also lacecap versions of these hydrangeas. (H. macrophylla is native to the Far East.)
H. arborescens, a US native, includes the widely-planted, Annabelle. Much like the Mopheads, Annabelle is a shorter hydrangea with huge rounded flower clusters in pure white. This is the one famous for flowers so large they often weigh down the branches, needing special support.
H. paniculata, is a larger species, much taller than the Mopheads. The flower clusters are more cone-shaped, rather than round. The plant in this group is more rangy than the shorter types, but can be controlled by pruning. The famous Pee Gee hydrangea, often grown as a small tree is in this group, and was imported from Japan in the late 19th century. There are also newer H. paniculata hybrids, including the beautiful greenish-flowered one called Limelight.
Other Types: There are several other important hydrangeas. The tall native Oakleaf hydrangea (sometimes considered a small tree) is also a variety of the species, H. paniculata.

"Plants arrived in great shape and have been doing great since I planted them."
"Plant arrived VERY small and I was very excited about this guy to add some winter interest to my garden. It quickly put on a second leaf after I planted. So, I was excited by the vigor it seemed to display. But, no sooner, the whole thing was eaten to a nub. Had I known it would be attractive to a pest, I would have covered with something protective. Otherwise, I wish this had been shipped in a much larger size."
"It will be a few years before I see blooms I expect but it's a healthy start"
"It's coming along well. I snipped off the single bloom so it could put more energy into getting established."
"They were just too small. I had faith and put them in the ground and the bunnies here promptly chewed them. I moved them and tried to protect them but it was too late. I wish I had known I should have potted these up first and put them up on a table, etc. away from wildlife. A reminder to folks about bunnies eating these, especially in winter, would be a good improvement."
"I planted 3 of these plants along the driveway and they are doing great. I heavily mulched them and watered them weekly. I then purchased 3 more plants but only 1 lived. The other 2 perished almost immediately after I got them. That was disappointing and I emailed what happened but I received no response."
"I planted a very small plant with only two leaves on it in April 2019 and now, a little over a year later, it's about 3 ft tall and has at least 7 beautiful flowers on it. It's a beautiful addition to my front landscape. I love it!!"
"I got this to fill a large area in my garden where I can't seem to get anything to grow. This one part of the garden is different than the rest of it and had different needs. This was suggested to me by customer service, and while it is still too small (only a year old) to really see how it's going to turn out, it seems to be doing great and is exactly what we are hoping it to be. Since it is doing so well, we are hoping to putt the rest of the gardens around it in the same color scheme as we get them going to really set off this beautiful plant."
"Four years ago transplanted taller Alice Oakleafs (can grow 10 feet) to a side yard where height is a benefit when they reached 5 feet in front yard flower bed and were starting to block windows and replaced with this shorter dwarf cultivar. Great choice. I now have learned to read the dimensions when selecting a cultivar. Benefit also from the few suckers Ruby Slippers sends out each year and have passed along these suckers or moved throughout my property. All transplants have survived. Suckering not an issue but a benefit. Alice has not suckered for me in 9 years. Also easy to create new transplant with layering. Surprisingly fast growing for me in the Ozarks. Unique white to a dusty red blossom, long blooming period and best Oakleaf foliage colors in red shades in the fall. A must have."
"Thought I bought the wrong plant because the flowers where white, then read about them because they start out white, then turn pink and then turn Ruby red. It's really cool to watch these plants. I love Hydrangeas!!"
