'Blackhawks' Big Bluestem Grass is a cultivar of a fine native prairie grass that has taken the gardening world by storm. Foliage emerges dark green, shifting to a deep purple that darkens as summer turns to fall, culminating in purple blooms with tiny white seeds. This long-lived grass provides bold contrast in gardens or meadows, offering privacy, year-round visual interest, and habitat for birds and pollinators.(Andropogon)

Very underwhelming

"I bought a few of these to bring variety to my property and this is how they showed up. I was expecting small, however was not expecting two of the tree I ordered to almost be dead. I don't know if they will be salvageable."

Unimpressed

"For as big as these grasses are supposed to get, they sure start out tiny. They were very fragile, sometimes all the grass blades fell out while planting. I bought 4 of these. They kept dying. American Meadows was true to their word with sending replacements and even gave advice (thank you). But in the end, out of 7 or 8 plants, only 2 have survived. I wish they would send them as larger plants; maybe they'd be more sturdy. I'm going to try them again this year anyway because I want that variety in those two empty spots."

Not the best this time….

"I ordered two roots two years ago. They grew so well, I ordered many more this past season. Not a single one of the new roots took. I was very saddened that the latest order wasn't as hardy as the first. I'll try again next year."

Doing well

"I bought 6 of these grasses. 3 for each side of the front of my house. They arrived healthy but were so tiny. It's been about 4 months now and all of them are doing well and finally starting to show some size. I'm sure they will get better every year."

Unassuming start, Impressive growth

"I was a little worried when I opened the box due to the grass being so small…but it ships in a dormant state. I followed the directions to a "T", and I'm very happy with the impressive, healthy, growing grass I have now! Thank you so much, American Meadows!!"

So far so good

"Bought two for the "back" of an island bed off my patio that is in full sun and will have only native and mostly pollinator-friendly perennials in "front". They seem quite healthy and have probably quadrupled in size since planting, but aren't growing as fast as I hoped."
