How do we use your location?
Knowing your location helps us recommend plants that will thrive in your climate, based on your Growing Zone.
(48-60” tall x 12-24” wide) Grasses bring movement, color and wildlife to the garden, and 'Blackhawks' Big Bluestem also brings style. With a strongly upright profile and a color that deepens with each passing day, 'Blackhawks' Big Bluestem is a fabulous cultivar of one of our best native prairie grasses from Intrinsic Perennials. Showing off deep purple to black leaves throughout the summer season, 'Blackhawks' can be used alone as a specimen plant or incorporated into a meadow or garden bed with beautiful results. In winter, the color turns into a burnt sienna, and the grass stands tall, bringing architectural interest to frosty gardens. Plant 'Blackhawks' Big Bluestem in average soils in full sun for best results. Overly rich soil will cause this grass to flop. A deer and rabbit resistant perennial grass to enjoy for many years! "I bought a few of these to bring variety to my property and this is how they showed up. I was expecting small, however was not expecting two of the tree I ordered to almost be dead. I don't know if they will be salvageable."
"For as big as these grasses are supposed to get, they sure start out tiny. They were very fragile, sometimes all the grass blades fell out while planting. I bought 4 of these. They kept dying. American Meadows was true to their word with sending replacements and even gave advice (thank you). But in the end, out of 7 or 8 plants, only 2 have survived. I wish they would send them as larger plants; maybe they'd be more sturdy. I'm going to try them again this year anyway because I want that variety in those two empty spots."
"I ordered two roots two years ago. They grew so well, I ordered many more this past season. Not a single one of the new roots took. I was very saddened that the latest order wasn't as hardy as the first. I'll try again next year."
"I bought 6 of these grasses. 3 for each side of the front of my house. They arrived healthy but were so tiny. It's been about 4 months now and all of them are doing well and finally starting to show some size. I'm sure they will get better every year."
"I was a little worried when I opened the box due to the grass being so small…but it ships in a dormant state. I followed the directions to a "T", and I'm very happy with the impressive, healthy, growing grass I have now! Thank you so much, American Meadows!!"
"Bought two for the "back" of an island bed off my patio that is in full sun and will have only native and mostly pollinator-friendly perennials in "front". They seem quite healthy and have probably quadrupled in size since planting, but aren't growing as fast as I hoped."
