'Shenandoah' Red Switchgrass is a favorite selection of native prairie grass with gorgeous, colorful leaves. New growth emerges green with red tips. Gradually the entire plant turns to a rich burgundy color that appears to be aflame when backlit by the sun. Airy blooms appear in midsummer, hazy clouds floating above the leaves. Its a real showstopper year-round, with seed heads providing an important food source for native wildlife during the winter. (Panicum virgatum)
36-48" tall (48-60" with plumes) x 18-24" wide. Fast
growing 'Shenandoah' Red Switchgrass is one of the all-time favorite ornamental
grasses. This native hybrid grass can be grown as a mass planting or dotted
throughout the garden or foundation bed for texture and movement. Panicum grows
best in full sun, and can tolerate poor soils. Mix and match with other native
perennials, such as Rudbeckia, Echinacea, and Phlox. Leave to stand during the
winter for habitat and visual interest, and cut back in early spring.

The base of the stem(s) should be just at the soil surface after watering in
"Product arrived in excellent shape and was easy to plant with supplied instructions. Not as tolerant to wet soils as indicated by the description, several plants situated close to water succumbed when exposed to occasional soil saturation. It's only been a few months since planting so can't yet comment on summer or fall appearance. Looking forward to red fall color and "airy summer blooms" next summer (plants did not bloom this first summer)."

Did not survive their first winter
"I planted several of these with the intention of screening off the area under our deck. None of them made it through their first winter - which was admittedly an extra long, cold winter. I replaced them with larger plants bought locally, for a better chance at life."

I am very satisfied with this product
"Used to line the lane. Defines the edge and has a good appearance."

Slow growing with a few duds.
"I ordered 9 and planted the small clumps. They arrived very nicely boxed with easy instructions. I am a landscaper so I know which plants will work for the areas. Sadly it has been months since planted and 3 out of the 9 never sprouted a single blade of grass. It threw the design out the window so I will have to dig them out and replant some sedge. It's a bummer because no one has this beautiful switchgrass and it would have looked great at maturity against the cedar siding."

SO HAPPY THAT I BOUGHT THIS NATIVE GRASS TO PLANT!
"I have an area that I am planting more grasses in and I decided to try this one out. I bought 3 of these plants and they are going to make quite a statement when they reach full maturity. The seed heads are now sprouting out on them and they are just so delicate looking. I love the fact that birds can eat the seeds from this plant but also when this plant is more mature, it will offer shelter to them also."

Great Plant - Lacks Color
"Good grower for a full sun grass, but I'm still waiting for the reddish leaves to develop which are suppose to happen when planted in full sun. Also, I needed to cut some branches that were heavy and spreading out from the bottom to give it the upright shape. So far, the plant looks good and I haven't harmed it with the trimming. Would still like to see the reddish tips as shown in the picture. Because of this, I'd have to say, I would not recommend the plant, but time may still tell!"

Great color and texture native grass
"This warm season native cultivar is a shorter colorful version of other switch grass. Spreads slowly by rhizomes and is very maintenance free by having to cut down only once a year in early spring. Performs well in dry or moist conditions."
