Also called “tree mallow”, this lovely species blooms late along with the cosmos, and in the same colors—white and pink. As the weather cools, the pink flowers become deep cerise. This is a Mediterranean native with deep green, rounded leaves and hibiscus-like blooms. Plants are handsome and stately.

"Started as seeds indoors and late spring planted outside,. Grew fast but the deer kept eating the plant to a nub. Luckily mallow keeps on growing. Finally I found a deer repellent called deer out and no more deer. Plant is beautiful. See pic below."
"These have done well everywhere from rocky clay soil underneath hollyhocks and glads, to shady mulch borders, to mixed perennial/annual hillsides. The flowers are NEON pink and they last a surprisingly long time cut (even out of water!). I'll never go a season without these."
"The rose mallow is very versatile as it grows in sun or shade. The blooms are beautiful and relatively large for the size of the plant. I didn't have great germination with these this year, but have planted them many times with success. The only warnings I have are that the Japanese beetles and deer love to eat them!"
"I had never grown Rose Mallow until I tried it in one of American Meadows' mixes. It is a very attractive and tall plant that the butterflies seem to love. It will grow in sun or shade and is very versatile. My only problem with it is that the Japanese Beetles seem to love the blooms, too. I control them by hand-picking so that the bees and butterflies aren't exposed to pesticides. Other than that, no problems and an easy plant to grow. So glad American Meadows helped me discover this species for my garden!"
"Lovely satiny medium pink & white hibiscus-like blooms on sturdy tall multi-stalked plants. Multiple blossoms per stalk & floriferous with occasional watering. Very pretty but better for a casual mixed border or naturalized area since the plant can become large and stems spread outward. With less water, plants tend to have just 2-4 stalks and remain narrow & tall, although fewer blooms. I have them growing on a bank towards the back of a mixed border in clay soil, full sun. I allow a few to die back & go to seed and they return to bloom again each summer. The foliage of soft green oval leaves is unremarkable & not prominent. Good heat tolerance."

"I've had these plants before when a neighbor gave me some of hers and I loved them, so I decided to get my own seeds. They weren't as healthy as those I received from my neighbor, but still beautiful."
"I bought a bag of these seeds and planted them in a corner garden where I also have large hibiscus plants. The blooms are similar, and I thought they would complement each other nicely. I found so-so germination in peat pellets and a covered flat when I tested my bag of seeds, but I did not think it warranted a complaint. When I broadcast the seeds into soil, I had similar results, and actually did not mind the low germination after I saw the plant and its bloom. It was not one of my favorite plants. I gave some of the seeds away, and scattered the remainder of last year's bag in the same garden area Spring 2013. I have found that I like them better than last year, but they are still not one of my favorite. All of my blooms have been pink. I have discovered blooming plants late spring throughout the summer, and not just late summer to all according to the product description. Enjoyment is just a matter of personal preference, and I cannot reduce the star rating because of that. I give rose mallow three stars simply because it did not germinate as well as others of A. M. 's "easy" products sold in bulk for broadcasting across prepared soil."
"I received a few free packets of 'seed' From 'AmericanMeadows', it contained several 'Rose Mallow' seeds in them. I was very happy with the plants that grew from them, so I bought a small 'bulk' bag of white/pink mix'Rose Mallow' seed from 'AmericanMeadows' and have planted some of it in select spots already this spring. It is growing already here. The Honey Bees really loved it last summer."
