How do we use your location?
Knowing your location helps us recommend plants that will thrive in your climate, based on your Growing Zone.
Peacock Orchids, absolute knock-outs in the garden, are actually not an orchid at all, but a Gladiolus! Each flower stalk produces several orchid-like blooms, each opening sequentially from late summer through fall. The individual flowers last a few days and make long-lasting cut flowers. Make sure to place Peacock Orchids where you can enjoy their lovely jasmine-like fragrance, which gets stronger at night.
Like a peacock, these exquisite flowers will rise above sword-like foliage and open like spectacular rare orchids. Due to their narrow profile, Peacock Orchids can be placed in tight spaces throughout a garden, but perform exceptionally well when placed in groups of 5 or more, or as a drift through a border or meadow.
As soon as your order is placed you will receive a confirmation email. You will receive a second email the day your order ships telling you how it has been sent. Some perennials are shipped as potted plants, some as perennial roots packed in peat. The ‘Plant Information’ section describes how that item will ship. All perennials and fall-planted bulbs are packaged to withstand shipping and are fully-guaranteed. Please open upon receipt and follow the instructions included.
Perennials and fall-planted bulbs are shipped at the proper planting time for your Growing Zone. Perennial and fall-planted bulb orders will arrive separately from seeds. "Grew quick."
"I've bought Peacock Orchids many times from American Meadows and they are always delightful bloomers. They are easy to plant since the bulbs are small and not planted deeply. The Peacock Orchids begin blooming in late July (just as the surprise lilies are finishing) and last through September, brightening the mid-summer garden. I live in Zone 6B and, unfortunately, they are not perennials here except for a few stalwart bulbs that grow in very protected areas of our yard. I over-winter the bulbs in peat moss and plant them again in March."
"Beautiful, graceful white flowers that bloom for weeks."
"I wish I had a better review for you. I was so excited to find these. I followed planting instructions and read about them online as well. The bulbs felt a bit "hollow" to me but I have never held these before so didn't know what to expect. I now think most were not viable. All were planted in the same 5x5 foot area. I checked on them daily. Our area has been experiencing "progress" so we no longer have squirrels or other wildlife that could have stolen them. Only one grew. It is still blooming. Tall and beautiful. But it was awfully expensive for just the one. I'd give one star but the one that did grow is lovely."
"Very uneven growth. Some bulbs produced strong plants, other bulbs - adjacent to first -- produced small, weak plants. Will be lucky if 6 of them bloom. Planted them in four different locations to see what they liked best, but same results."
"Tall, slender plants with beautiful white blooms!"
"In normal conditions im sure they would be beautiful"
"I love the difference the Peacock Orchids have made in my front garden. They are popular with my neighbors. Although 5 feet high they are dainty and whispy and allow other flowers/plants to grow underneath. Very easy to grow in clay soil and hardy though our weather is down to 40 degrees at night."
"This is our 2nd year growing these and we absolutely love them. (Zone 6b/7a) I cram the whole bag of bulbs into one large, deep clay pot and by the end of July, we are rewarded with lovely blooms that just keep on flowering. We will continue buying these lovely, stately flowers if for no other reason than to impress our friends!"
"I have purchased these bulbs every year from American meadows for 5 years and successfully grew them in pots outside. This year I ordered 25 corms and only 6 of those bloomed, the rest were duds. Very disappointing as I love them and their fragrance. I'll try again next year, maybe you could send redeemable coupon. Thank you. Terry"
