A long time industry standard, Vernal Alfalfa was introduced by the University of Wisconsin in the 1950s as an outstanding winter hardy alfalfa for northern climates. A cool season grower, it produces the most growth in spring and fall. Vernal Alfalfa prefers full sun, is deep-rooted and is very drought-tolerant. It prefers sandy to loamy soils, but will tolerate most well-drained soils if the pH is between 6.4-7.5. It blooms with charming purple flowers in late spring.

First time grower for alfalfa to be used as cover crop and .
"Lost all of my potatoes and tomatoes after using local bought straw. First time growing my own alfalfa to use in my garden. Looks promising. I have three small areas(40'-80' sq. ) I seeded on the 11 th. Of September and already have a good stand. Germination in 3-4 days."

Excellent Customer Service, Fast Shipping, Very Poor Product
"I've planted Hairy Peruvian, Ladak, Nomad, and African Lucerne in the past and have all thrived. We placed half of the seeds into growing flats so that we could transfer to our fodder fields, plus the other half was roll planted, and neither struck. Unfortunately, I feel that these seeds might have either been exposed to moisture or heat in the warehouse, or the seeds were simply non-viable, and the company may not be aware of this issue. This is a first for total ruminant forage crop failure we've experienced in 18 years of farming. I hope they get this issue figured out. My family in other states has purchased from American Meadows in the past with no issue, which is why I purchased from them, so this is a first for me. The rest of the experience was positive. Shipped very fast, professionally packaged & labeled well."

Very nice thick coverage.
"This took two years to really take off. The first year after planting in the fall I had cornflowers, and now the alfalfa has really taken off. It's really thick and healthy in a full sun, very dry bed. So, not exactly as I planned but it it bloomed well eventually and is re-seeding now!"

Super easy to germinate and grow
"I wanted to grow my own alfalfa for my roses, veggies and other plants since it helps growth and yields. I saw the other reviews here, but had good luck with some other seeds from American Meadows (Lacy Phacelia), so I thought I would take the chance. I had absolutely no trouble getting these seeds to grow. I really didn't do much work at all. Sprinkled them around, lightly covered, then let the rain water them in for me. In my area it gets very hot so I germinated them in January. No problem whatsoever! I actually had way more sprout than I expected! I highly recommend these seeds. Especially for those inland in California, since that is my climate."
