A great winter companion or cover crop. Helps with erosion control, fixes nitrogen, and increases organic matter if seeded after crops are harvested in the fall. (Secale cereale)

This work amazingly as a cover crop

"This worked absolutely amazing for a cover crop for my vegetable garden. Last year this was area filled with dandelions in the spring and although I spent the summer digging them out there were still a bunch there in the fall. We tilled and spread winter rye and I didn't see a single dandelion in bloom this spring although there were plenty in bloom everywhere else."

Came Up Quickly

"I Spread the rye seed by hand and it came out great as a cover crop for a wildflower area on my side yard."

Don't buy this product if you don't want weed problems

"We used this product last fall as a place-holder, biomass provider and wind erosion-preventer on a 3,000-square-foot area we intend to seed with fescue this spring. It did those jobs just fine--but it also brought in an infestation of hoary cress/whitetop--a noxious weed we've never encountered before in our area. We've eliminated all other possibilities--the topsoil and horse manure we imported from nearby (no whitetop has shown up in other areas of the property where we used the same topsoil and manure). Nor did tilling bring up the whitetop; we didn't till the area before seeding--only raked it. We've never had any whitetop anywhere on the property in the four years we have lived here. We conclude--sadly--that the weed came in with the American Meadows Winter Rye."

Great cover crop

"Great cover crop for my vegetable garden. Germinated fast in less than ideal conditions. I would definitely recommend."

Great Information from American Meadows

"The information gathered from American Meadows made all the difference. The lawn areas experience high foot traffic, and to maintain the grass during event season is a challenge. The seed performed as advertised, with noticeable growth after 4 days and cover in seeded areas after 7 days. Planting took place in mid-September, and the lawn performed through late November. I would recommend a minimal cover (1/4"), though the seeds did well with no cover upon planting. Completely satisfied with the performance; purchased 20 lbs. for spring planting to mix with creeping red fescue for the warm season."
