Challenging in Clay Soil

Comments about American Meadows Black Magic Elephant Ear:

I put these in our Virginia zone 6b/7a clay soil in part shade and didn't do much to amend. Nothing happened all through early
& mid-summer -- a few healthy leaves appeared and a few died off. In the last few weeks it has finally put out a few more leaves and grown a bit, but overall I would guess that it needs a better spot and a much looser soil. I had a similar problem with a colocasia that I moved to a pot and it rebounded fine. I probably should have moved this to a pot. Maybe next year if I can get it to overwinter. Wouldn't buy again to put in the ground. Label on the plant stated it could live in water i.e. a pond plant, which is why I figured no need to amend if it can handle water. This seems misleading.

Beautiful leaves; mix with Imperial Taro and plant near border so you can see them. In zone 6 as an annual, they will not reach full size.

This did not tolerate the 1 - 2 hours of afternoon sun. I will dig the bulb and plant in a more shady spot next year.

          Q & A

          Plant With These:

          USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

          • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
          • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).
