Comments about American Meadows Thailand Giant Elephant Ear:

Planted soon after arrival in sandy soil in an area of about 70% shade in north Texas. These started pretty good, but even with very regular watering, once the temps started hitting the mid 90's and above every day these plants slowly gave up and by the end of August they were nowhere to be found. At their best the leaves they put out were 6" to 8" in size. Plenty good for a first year plant, as the 20 or so other elephant ears planted in the same area don't hit full stride for a season or two.

I've tried many different elephant ear varieties over the years. While I've had excellent luck with "upright" varieties, including the Upright Elephant Ear Mayan Mask I got from American Meadows on the same order, I've had much less success with most other varieties, a factor I attribute to the brutal north Texas summers.

Maybe if I planted them in a container that allowed me more focus on the individual plant and was movable it would have worked better, but since the two I planted have not put out any growth in 2 months I doubt I'll be able to find the bulb to dig up and try again.

      My Elephant Ear Thailand Giant

      By

      from Mexico, Missouri

Comments about American Meadows Thailand Giant Elephant Ear:

First of all I do not have a green thumb. After seeing smaller elephant ears at a public golf course I decided I would buy one and see what happens. I couldn't have been happier. After searching the internet for who to buy from I choose American Meadows. The plant was healthy when received and absolutely thrived in Missouri's hot steamy summer. They were not in the shade but in direct sunlight . They have more then exceeded my expectations . Now that fall is approaching I was given prompt answers to my e-mail inquiry as to how to prepare the plant for winter. Shannon was very informative. All in all my experience with American Meadows and my first Elephant Ear plant was a huge success. Thank you very much. Charles Smith

This Elephant Ear grew so big, next year it will go in the corner of my yard. Helped create a Tropical effect; reminding me of my childhood growing up in Key West.

I planted this according to the directions, and the plant did not thrive. It looks just like the elephant ears I bought at a mass market retailer. I will not buy again.

      Cons

      • Browning Of Leaf Edges

      • Planter So Easilycan Move

Comments about American Meadows Thailand Giant Elephant Ear:

Hard to determine cause of browning edge of leafs - too much sun, not enough, moisture conditions should be OK with planter drainage. Move to more sunny location. Results pending.

      Q & A

      Plant With These:

      USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

      • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
      • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).
