'Catlin's Giant' Ajuga creates a thick, weed-smothering groundcover in almost any spot, tolerating poor soils and full shade with grace. The gorgeous, deep-indigo flower spikes attract butterflies and hummingbirds to the garden in late spring and pair beautifully with the bronze-tinged leaves. Try this one under trees and in other spots where grass struggles to grow. (Ajuga reptans)

USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

  • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
  • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).

Plant Information

Here, "Giant" refers to the plant's spread, which is from one to two feet, while the spiky flowers still grow to only 3 to 9 inches tall.

An impressive groundcover, Ajuga is masterful at filling in spaces where other plants struggle to grow – even under Black Walnut trees. Its glossy, colorful foliage forms rosettes that stay close to the ground, creating a dense carpet that suppresses weeds and controls erosion. In summer, delightful flower spikes attract pollinators and add beauty to the summer landscape. Low-maintenance plants do not need trimming or deadheading. Ajuga, also called Bugleweed, is deer and rabbit-resistant, and readily adapts to a variety of conditions. Ajuga can be planted in full sun, part sun, and full shade locations, and it tolerates a wide range of soils, although it can be susceptible to root rot in very wet sites. It spreads by forming offshoots (stolons) that reach away from the plant, forming nodes and sending down roots where they touch the ground. Ajuga reptans is native to Europe, northern Africa, and southwestern Asia. Use this lovely, vigorous grower to your advantage!
