'Cinderella' Swamp Milkweed's vanilla-scented flowers are a treat for the senses. Deep pink petals with white centers bloom in 2” wide clusters. Compact in form, 'Cinderella' makes an excellent choice for small, sunny gardens and performs well in low spots and moist areas. Like all swamp milkweeds, 'Cinderella' is a vital host plant for Monarchs, providing essential food and habitat for both the growing caterpillars and adult butterflies. (Asclepias incarnata)

Plant Information

36-48" tall x 12-36" wide. ‘Cinderella’ is one of the most beautiful swamp milkweeds with refined foliage, a compact habit, and dense flower clusters. Narrow leaves arch gracefully away from long, sturdy stems that are excellent for cutting. Sear the cut stems over a flame to stop the flow of milky sap in bouquets. Seed pods are also attractive in flower arrangements. Blooming over a long period, the vibrant flowers are pollinator magnets attracting native bees, Monarchs, Queen butterflies, and hummingbirds. Deadheading will lengthen the bloom cycle. Take advantage of the plant’s affinity for wet soils by planting in low spots and other poorly-drained areas. Excellent for planting in rain gardens or edging ponds. Plants are resistant to deer and rabbit browsing. Swamp milkweed exhibits good heat tolerant when provided adequate water.

Q & A

Plant With These:

USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

  • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
  • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).
